Are Dragonite the new Gyrados?
By this I mean this example. I'm a mostly rural player and in my town we have 3 gyms. Most of the regular players I recognize with an occasional new player popping up. One of the gyms was built up to level 3 as I came back into town. Later on I saw it was built up a level with a regular player putting in a 2900 Dragonite on top of the gym. I know she has a 3000+ Dragonite which my Lapras with Ice Beam has enjoyed making snacks of. I took down the gym to level 1. Put in my 1372 cp Piloswine with Ice Shard/Avalanche for the final battle against the 2900 cp Dragonite and tore it apart. With Swinub so common where I am it seems like Dragonite is countered by ice types as easily as Gyarados is by electric types. By the way I am in Minnesota, USA which is mostly really cold during the winter.

It totally depends on your biome, to take down Dragonites I use Dragonites mainly (I have 4 at this point, 2 of them with DB for offense and the other 2 for defense), but I barely see Ice types (I think my ice medal is at 11 or 12 at this point and I am level 35).
To get mon like Lapras, Cloyster or Jynx I had to hatch a lot of eggs. Lapras took me since launch until I hatched her on Halloween, not a single one has spawned on my town.
And I have only found 2 Swinub since gen2 released so I know it will take me months to get Piloswine.
Dragonite and Gyarados are in the same defender 2.5 tier. Only Blissey and Snorlax are above that tier. What mons below below them don't have an "easy counter"? Pretty much they all do. Funny how people knock Dragonites as defenders because I scratch my head on what other mons are better? Oh, Blissey and Snorlax. Rhydon seems to get knocked on also for the same reason. So what's better beside the obvious? Not much
