Are Alakazam and Gengar still useless?

I just evolved an alakazam and got a psycho cut/psyhic. I also evolved 4th gengar with shadow claw/sludge bomb. (The first 3 got sucker punch lol ) Are they worth powering up? I mean they have no advantageous matchups or should I use them for prestiging ?

If you think they are useful then good luck playing a hard game for nothing.

Alakazam currently has the highest DPS moveset in the game. It's very time-efficient at taking down gyms if you're good at dodging.

Highest DPS with no SE damage against any of the pokemon in the gym meta, making both of them still pretty useless.

No SE damage but with very few counters. How many Pokémon right now can resist Psychic? Point is most Pokémon will receive x1 damage from Alakazam. And with those stats, he's 2nd to Mewtwo in terms of damage.

2nd in terms of neutral damage. When attacking high level gyms, you need to deal SE damage and you also need a good amount of HP to get you through more than one Pokémon. An Alakazam would only be useful against a ZH Snorlax in the gym meta, but even though it may finish off the Snorlax faster, assuming you fit in 4 Psycho Cuts per ZH and perfect dodging, it's not going to be able to take down 2 Snorlaxes like a Vaporeon would. A Kadabra with Psycho Cut is more useful, bc at least you can use it to train

So theorical over practical. I have my own Alakazam too and I'm so sure that this pokemon is not that useful you think it is. I can take down lv10 gym 2700+ with 2 Dragonite and 1 Vaporeon ,why do I bother use this pokemon that can barely survive in one fight?

I am struggling with the Alakazam too. Have one with Psycho Cut/Psychic, best moves apparently. Used it for training initially but it fainted very quickly. Powered it right up to 2500. But it is still very fragile. Maybe this was dust wasted. Am probably not as good at dodging as you are and I get lag sometimes so might miss a charge move. He is a goner then.

git gud at dodging. My Kazam can defeat even 3 snorlax in a row. I guess he have a good trainer.

I wouldn't say they are useless but they more useful for prestiging rather than attacking. It's always nice to have at least 1 of each with the best moveset. If you don't have enough attackers, you can power up 1 but not both. I prefer attacking a gym with a variety of mons rather than an army of 6 vapes/dragonites/exeggs.

Yeah, I feel like powering alakazam against those Zenheadbutt Snorlax might be a good idea too.

You are useful for preserving your spot at the gyms since their high CP after the update.

(In the following context, by "Gengar" I mean Shadow Claw/Sludge Bomb Gengar; by "Alakazam" I mean Psycho Cut/Psychic Alakazam)
Gengar is still not useful, but Alakazam is one of the best attackers now in the game.
In most scenarios, there will always be a better choice than Gengar for attacking, in terms of both DPS and total damage output.
On the other hand, until now no other Pokemon can take down Poison types and Fighting types faster than Alakazam, even Dragonite. In some cases, Alakazam takes down Snorlax even faster than Dragonite.

Both are terrible at defending gyms. There's only one purpose of putting them into gyms: showing off.

So you should be happy to have a generic killer in your team.

Alakzam is not only useful, but is one of the best attackers in the game. Gengar less so.

I was skeptical too about Alakazam, but after getting a psycho cut psychic one and using him I have to say, if you can dodge well he is a really fantastic attacker.

What do you use him against? How many quick moves can you get in between your opponent's quick moves? When is he most effective? I feel I am missing something here. Probably skill, as I am old and not used to "fighting" games. So if you have any tips they are welcome.
