Are Alakazam and Gengar still useless?
I just evolved an alakazam and got a psycho cut/psyhic. I also evolved 4th gengar with shadow claw/sludge bomb. (The first 3 got sucker punch lol ) Are they worth powering up? I mean they have no advantageous matchups or should I use them for prestiging ?

2nd in terms of neutral damage. When attacking high level gyms, you need to deal SE damage and you also need a good amount of HP to get you through more than one Pokémon. An Alakazam would only be useful against a ZH Snorlax in the gym meta, but even though it may finish off the Snorlax faster, assuming you fit in 4 Psycho Cuts per ZH and perfect dodging, it's not going to be able to take down 2 Snorlaxes like a Vaporeon would. A Kadabra with Psycho Cut is more useful, bc at least you can use it to train
I am struggling with the Alakazam too. Have one with Psycho Cut/Psychic, best moves apparently. Used it for training initially but it fainted very quickly. Powered it right up to 2500. But it is still very fragile. Maybe this was dust wasted. Am probably not as good at dodging as you are and I get lag sometimes so might miss a charge move. He is a goner then.
I wouldn't say they are useless but they more useful for prestiging rather than attacking. It's always nice to have at least 1 of each with the best moveset. If you don't have enough attackers, you can power up 1 but not both. I prefer attacking a gym with a variety of mons rather than an army of 6 vapes/dragonites/exeggs.
(In the following context, by "Gengar" I mean Shadow Claw/Sludge Bomb Gengar; by "Alakazam" I mean Psycho Cut/Psychic Alakazam)
Gengar is still not useful, but Alakazam is one of the best attackers now in the game.
In most scenarios, there will always be a better choice than Gengar for attacking, in terms of both DPS and total damage output.
On the other hand, until now no other Pokemon can take down Poison types and Fighting types faster than Alakazam, even Dragonite. In some cases, Alakazam takes down Snorlax even faster than Dragonite.
Both are terrible at defending gyms. There's only one purpose of putting them into gyms: showing off.
So you should be happy to have a generic killer in your team.
