appraisal and moveset

I just evolved a Dragonite (walked with Dragonair for almost 300 km) and got the best attacking moveset DB/DC, very happy about this! This is my 2nd Dragonite, 1st one was SW/HB so I was really worried to get another SW, would take me months to evolve another Dragonite.

Just wondering if there's any data on whether appraisal (attack vs defense) has any bearing on evolved moveset? I mean is there a better chance of getting attacking moveset if appraisal says best attribute is attack?

Have you guys noticed any correlation between appraisal and resulting moveset or is it all random?

50/50 all random

I might add roughly 50/50 as some mons have movesets strong for both ATK/DEF and since you can't use for atk and def with same mon at the same time I think it adds a third odd...like 35/35/30...guestimate.

I have a theory and it's only a theory. I find that level 20 mons with high IVs get best move set when evolved. So that means hatched mons at 93 or higher IV may get ideal move set. Each mon with two possible fast attack moves has a 1 out of 6 chance of any moveset combo. I've beaten those odds with level 20 base mons with high IV. Could be luck but it raises an eyebrow. Most of my hatched mons got A rating movesets for either offense or defense after evolution. Coincidence? Is anyone else experience this? To power up a base mon before evolve is a cardinal sin for any self respecting trainer. But because I wanted to test out my theory I took a level 12 dratini of 96% IV and powered it up to level 20. Then I evolved it to Dragonite and got DB/DC. I was amazed because I either got stupid lucky or my theory worked.

If my theory holds true then I have another theory why this theory is true. Still with me? I believe this is a way for Niantic to secretly reward incubator buyers. More hatched mons equals better IV and better move sets. We already know that the IV range is higher for hatched mons but moveset roll is still mysterious and difficult to confirm randomness. Maybe they also reward movesets for hatchers so they buy more incubators. Just a theory.

Very interesting theory! Actually I think you may be on to something :) I have experienced something rather similar as I have bought quite a few incubators. It would be interesting to get some research done on this subject even though I would imagine it's rather difficult to gather such data, needs a large sample to confirm anything.

That said I didn't dare to power my 89 iv Dragonite before evolving since I was really concerned I would get another SW... so I was actually already preparing to grind another 100 candy...

Agree that it will be difficult to confirm this but I got the best move sets for so many level 20 base mons when evolved it really got me thinking. My Golem, Rhydon, Dragonites, Vapes, Eggys, Arcanines, jolts, Flareons, Gengar, machamp, venusaur, Blastoise, charizard, etc all got best movesets. This happens more often than not. One of the few that I got screwed on moveset from a high IV level 20 base mon was Alakazam. Gave me PC/SB. Uhhgg.

Yeah, Alakazam! At least you got PC/SB, I got two C/DG in a row.... working on my 3rd one :)
