Any tips for catching Lugia other than the obvious

I can't toss better than I did with the last one--5 excellent curves and 3 greats out of 10 balls. And yes, I used great razz for each.

Are you guys just incredible ball tossers (heh) with never-miss excellent throws or is it just luck? Hopefully, my bad luck with Lugia turns in catching one of the legendaries I'd really want to power up.

You seem to have had very bad luck in this Raid. I caught my Lugia (1 out of 2) with a great throw only and didn't land a single excellent. I think you can't do much better than you already did.

It's just chance if you're throwing right. Don't beat yourself up.

I do usually try to be patient and throw when he's attacking so I hit in a window with a lower chance of him going nuts.

Just luck, my 2 Lugias, one from a great with golden berry and second one with a great with no berries.

Articuno is harder IMO, weird attack pattern and too much flying and floating around...

Just do the math. If you end up with a 5 % catch rate with all bonuses it's still more likely that you won't get it in 10 throws. Nothing spooky about that.

No tips for this sadly, it is just a pure RNG more than ever, the percentage is mad, only 2%, insanely low. I myself have struggled with 3 lugia in a row and was not able to catch any of them, on one of the 3, the second one, I made 4 excellent trows, curveball, golden berry, jumped out of each one on the first shake like nothing, not missed a single one of the 13 balls, getting at least great on all of them, nothing.

A guy next to me got him trowing straight away, no curve, and hitting him on the right wing...I could not believe it...This game relies almost nothing on skill and just pay to win and pure luck.

Don't blame yourself, I think you did better than probably 90% of players, so you will get him eventually ;)

It's certainly not "pure luck". I've had a wasaaaay better catch rate than the noobs throwing straight with me. I was 5/6 and no one else caught 3. Is RNG at play? Sure. Is it all pure luck? No. Do your best and you'll win out eventually.

I've been saying the same thing. Lots of players only throw straight and still be catching the hell out of them. It will even hit outside the color ring too.

Not the throwing bit, but go in a suitable group of fellow team players only and make a private group so you can maximise ball count. Same goes for choosing a gym controlled by your team. Gives you more balls, which sadly doesn't help with individual throws, but statistically should help you in the long run.

You really, really need to be on the team that gets the highest contribution. Your catch chance if you have berry, double gold medal bonuses, curve ball, and a 'Great' throw - but only three chances - is only about 10%. On the other hand, if you have ten chances and throw all of them with NO bonuses but your gold medals, you've got around a 30% catch chance. And, with ten chances, and all the bonuses, the chance to catch is up around 75% or so.

People I meet on the raids around town are all astonished that I'm 5 for 6 on catches, like I'm some kind of throw master... the reality though is just that Valor seems to always come out on top for contribution in my raids, so I'm getting way more throw chances than they are.

If you're getting 5 out of 6 that's definitely luck, but I agree with your points, you need to get the most contribution and preferably gym control as well to stack the odds in your favour.

I wish they would give it to you automatically with the golden/curve/excellent combo. Would make it more of a skill challenge instead of RNG.

The only variables are:

Curve ball
Berry type
Throw rating (nice, great, excellent)

Other than that it is luck. Sounds like you did very well with the throws, so just bad luck.
