Another solo Alakazam failure

Had another go at a solo Alakazam. Unfortunately the Alakazam had focus blast. First team:

CP Level IV (A-D-S) Pokemon Fast Charge
2079 29.5 14-9-14 Houndoom Snarl Foul Play
1912 28 11-11-6 Houndoom Snarl Crunch
2220 30 13-15-14 Gengar Hex Shadow Ball
3172 31 14-14-14 Tyranitar Bite Stone Edge
3112 30 14-14-13 Tyranitar Bite Stone Edge
3087 30 10-15-15 Tyranitar Bite Stone Edge

Now last time I did this, I didn't have a double dark Houndoom. I actually used two TM's to include Houndooms here AND spent 25k stardust powering up the S/FP one (thought I had taken it to L30, but apparently it was only 29.5)! Unfortunately it wasn't enough to win.

Desperate I used a charge TM on my Scizor with night slash to get double bug. Failed. Got steel. Even more desperate I powered up my L20 93% double bug Pinsir to level 30. 75k stardust gone! I put it on the team instead of one of the TTars. Did it work? Nope.

Unfortunately time was running out so I left. Even more unfortunately, a minute later one of the other PoGo players in town showed up, so we both missed the Alakazam. At least he didn't spend a pass.

So that was about 100k stardust spent to no avail. Hopefully the Pinsir and Houndooms will come in handy at some other time, but not exactly the optimal way of spending ones hard earned dust.

If I had tried a third time, I would probably have benched the Gengar. It just dies too quickly, I'm just not sure it is worth it.

I have a high level Gyarados I can TM into double dark and I have a fairly high level double dark Arcanine. Not sure they are fast enough for solo-play though.

That team will still come in handy when the legendary cats come.

Did you timeout or die?

If timeout how close?

Timeout. Very close on first attempt, which is why I thought the Pinsir might do it. However, on the second attempt I had some bad timing and I quit when I saw that I couldn't possibly make it (just to save potions). I should probably have made a third attempt. I also think that I might have made it if it hadn't had Focus Blast which just fried my TTars.

In general for me when I timeout I start using higher DPS mons with less resistances. I know you don't have a B/C Ttar which would be a great sub for one of those Se ones but maybe a high end Gengar or something.

Also the advice above about running the most fragile but high DPS mons first is something I do and have recommended around here in the past.

Shadow Claw is better than Hex, but it is currently a legacy move.

Houndoom isn't going to cut it. Along with 2 B/C Tar's, you need 2 Gengars and have to dodge enough to get off about 10 charge moves from them to have a chance, at least in my experience.

Against Focus Blast Alakazam or against Alakazam in general?

I haven't tried solo yet due to my phone being old/slow, but I think if you are solo (no one else will be helping generate energy for the boss initially), having your ultra glass cannons first (Gengar) is better since the raid boss wouldn't be able to fire off a charge move right away...

Hope it doesn't have confusion (hurts bad), but that will allow Gengar to do it's job initially...Houndoom has more HP that Gengar, but doesn't resist the Focus Blast as much...so if the Focus Blast is giving you trouble, I'd actually consider dodging the Confusion (since that's probably what's hurting you bad iniitlally) and try to have Gengar do more damage...Your moveset is the best currently obtainable set so you may even want to dodge the quick move and get more Gengars actually. Gengar is strange to use so it takes a lot of practice/skill to use them due to their typing (hurts others bad, but takes damage bad too).

I notice this a lot when I join raids with my wife...When I get in 10-30 seconds later, I've already been charged move immediately so my 1st guy gets knocked out (happened yesterday when I started with a Houndoom vs a Gengar)...
