Just got my first amp. 97.8 with vs/zc.

Worth using? I have lots of jolts.

He is better for defence but ZC is not because it has a much higher CD than TH so no I cant really think of a use but congrats.

You may not like the idea and I'm sure others would suggest otherwise but maybe a fun defender? I'm trying to get one with Volt Switch for that reason.

CP a little too high @ lvl 20 for prestiging and Volt Switch on Ampharos is not like Confusion on Exeggutor so this is at least what I'd do

I don't think it would be markedly worse than a lot of stuff in gyms. Not around here at least. I never attack with ground attackers really so I would have to try and take him with part of a generalist. But electric is effective versus flying so the Dragon is out.

Not exactly because dragon types resist electric moves so Ampharos would be dealing neutral damage. Ground types would still be more efficient I bet thanks to resistance and SE

Ah you're right Dragon does resist electric. Shows how often I see electric defenders lol.

Well my opinion of this move drops quite a bit if I can just run part of my Dragon over him.

Dragonite really is the go-to for wrecking gyms. Tyranitar too, a little bit

Blissey with Pound/Hyper Beam is much, much, much better at wrecking gyms.

Lucky you! 15xx is usually perfect for my area, but that makes almost all mons below Gyarados worthless.

I've gotten used to VS, especially in combination with Thunder, it's very tricky, because you have to be on point with everything but Ampharos high HP is quite forgiving for Gyarados non-STAB quick moves.

Well, gyms typically range from 2900-3600 (Tyranitar) but for prestiging I think it's best to keep it below 1400

I loathe using volt switch on offense. I typically get hit by 2 of the defender's fast attacks (not sure about confusion or volt switch) before getting a dodge in. Try it out first if you're thinking about powering it up for attacking. On paper, it should wreck in a gym with that moveset

I have a VS/D Jolteon that I love love love placing between two rhydons, vaporeons, or unexpected dupes. So jealous of your Amphy. Power that bad boy up, it'll probably be one of a very few of a kine in your area.

What sort of level do you need to get a jolt to to place it realistically in a gym?

Mine is 91 IV, but only at 2318 CP (though it's a level 30). I suspect you'll still need quite a few powerups to breach the 2500 'minimum' (though that is already quite low...)

Mines just shy of 2400 and takes 6000 dust to boost. I don't drop him in any old gym but every so often i come across a gym and he sits in spot 3 or 4. My Slowqueen is slightly lower cp and a higher level. She gets thrown in the fray less often. I'm doing my part to diversify though!

As always, great responses from the forum. I'm going to try him out vs some lower level Gary and see what I think!
