Alternative stragegy

While I wait for Niantic to fix the game I'm just going to occupy as many gyms as possible, I'll happily sit there and earn gold badges if no one wants to attack.
Sooner or later if an opposition team wants to claim a gym they will need to attack, I'll get booted.
The more gyms I occupy the better the chances that someone will attack me, or the more gold passes I'll have.
The only mistakes I have made so far is putting my top tier Mons into the gyms ... next time I'll put in strong mons but outside my top 20 ... I don't care how long they sit there.
The difference between this game an stagnant level 10 gyms is if I hit a level 10 for an opposition team there was nothing I could do about it.
Now I can take down most gyms single handed if need, if I have time, or just pick the right targets.
I do get all the criticism particularly the lower stardust rewards.....
But I am just going to play this game until an improved version comes along......
If you don't want the gyms then fine .... I am happy to sit there forever .....

I took over 6 gyms and only got booted out of 1. I still regret putting my Typhlo and Kingler in though. And my Golem, would have been nice to test him vs the Jolteon solo raid. At least those rival teams' mons brought them coins. Next time I'll just put in weaker stuff I likely won't need anytime soon.

Niantic should implement a turf war kind of thing to reward for owning a certain number of gyms. It could function similar to the old 10 coins a day thing.

There a lots of things they can do the best suggestion I have seen so far is a daily challenge around gyms...
e,g,
Spin a gym = 2 coins - 20 stardust
Defeat a rival Mon = 5 coins. - 200 stardust.
Take a rival gym = 15 coins - 1000 stardust
... add up to 50 coins...
This model rewards active play, if they had it an these daily challenge rewards were in addition to the 50 coins cap then player could make 100 coins per day provided they were active.
As well opposition teams completing their daily challenge are likely to boot our mons out of gyms and help get our 50 coins...
It think they will improve the game, hopefully the are taking note of the feedback, and the suggestions.

Yeah that sounds good. Well, if there's anyone who could get these suggestions to them, it's probably the websites like Kotaku that keep talking about the new update but fail to raise important subjects like "What do we do with the stagnant gyms that are even more stagnant than before?" and "What's in it for gym attackers?" Although technically the attackers should be fighting over a spot to earn coins, but since there are heaps of gyms in some cities, there is no need for fights, everyone has a spot now.

It is a different mentality, the only way you can force them to boot you is by owning all the gyms in a particular area..... and waiting ....
But clearly they need to change the game to give attackers more incentive.

Mystic players seem to have already done that. Still no change, there's blue everywhere! Valor and Instinct gave up.

On the bright side, I might end up getting the Silver Gym Leader badge of "Defend Gyms for 100 hours" at this rate...

Great idea, in fact I think adding bonuses to taking over gyms would keep people active for longer than 'just claiming' once a day in the old system and would counter stagnation

I think better idea is just get booted out of gym when pokemon has collected max daily coins.

I'm with you. Im sitting on 5-10 silver badges and 10 more defenders in the gym. By the time its fixed I expect to have some type of advantage.

I am guessing you meant "friendly gym?"

Both actually, we could not cheat and shave a friendly level 10 gym....
Even with 2 of us we didn't have the time / resources to take down a level 10 gym, it was mainly a matter of not having the time to do it.
Level 4 I could do solo, perhaps even up to level 6.
2 of us could generally take down a level 6.
With the changes 1-2 of us can take down most gyms.

He means rival....this is the problem.

This gym system is built for those that play occassionally...not their best customers.

It's actually built for shavers who have multiple accounts so they can flip the gym daily.
