If you want to join in a gym when it is full of slots. You have to train that gym with 1 of your pokemon. You will level up the gym if you defeat anyone allied defender pokemon. Keep in mind, when gym levels up, you have to act fast to put your pokemon in the gym otherwise someone else will take your spot despite you are the one who train the gym.
No different. They are the same and have no effect on the pokemon you'll get from them.
