To all of those cursing RNG: HOPE!!!
My small town rarely gets good spawns (like most of the rest of the world, I know). Before a week ago, I had seen one Lapras, one Chansey, no Snorlax, no Dratini (or any evolutions), no Larvitar, and the list goes on and on and on. Plus, I had only hatched one single Dratini (during the water event) since July. Dratini instantly became my buddy, I started walking more and then this happened this week:
Caught a wild Snorlax
Caught another wild Snorlax
Hatched a 91% IV Dratini for 32 candies
With all that, plus the buddy candy event rollover, I finally evolved my first Dragonite (DT/HB)!
Then today, I caught a wild Dratini!
So to all of those cursing the RNG, take heart! The beauty of random is that it could all turn around at any time!

Yes, RNG can change at anytime, and I am very happy for you, but this does not change the fact that RNG is too big in this game, huge I would say for rural players, casuals and people that live in small towns/areas.
When RNG destroys absolutely all player effort no matter what they do for me is poor game design. If you live in a small area and are not lucky with events you can play 12 hour per day and don't get a single good spawn, while other people may be getting 4 rares without even trying to, just openning the game at random moment while waiting the bus, or while in a shop, on a break from work, etc.
My town is not big either, but still I consider myself lucky because we have a "decent" number of spawns, gyms and stops, of course the spawns are 99% awful, and during this events I can see the difference even more.
I have played around 7 hours since event launched, the best I have seen is an Onix, I bet that not a single city player that has played this hours during the event has gotten only a single "rare" catch.
All good mon I have are from hatches, near 1100 eggs at this point, but I am not spending a single more cent on the game, just getting incubators from gyms since some months ago, I am really waiting for breeding and something else that can balance for not big city players, at least if we could breed I can make sure I get some rare candies to get my first Tyranitar/Ampharos.
Just my thoughts, but RNG should always be part of the game, not the game itself.
