Advice for gym battling deep in enemy turf?
I live in an area with a few gyms, and would ideally like to try to beat a couple of gyms a day to get the gym bonus. My problem is that another team has so many people who play daily, that their gyms are virtually uncontested by everyone except me.
I went to dinner last night and 2 enemy gyms went from lvl 2 and 4 to lvl 7 and 9 respectively.
Anyone have advice or is in a similar situation?
I have lots of wonderful defenders and attackers, but taking gyms has become laborious due to the sheer amount of people on the other team.

This is a tough one. Sadly, player distribution between teams is really bad in some areas, which ends up feeling like a hopeless struggle for some of us. I sometimes feel like all my neighbourhood gyms would be level 10 if it wasn't for me constantly beating them down.
I'd recommend trying to scout out an area where your team is stronger. I have had 2 gyms on the other side of town for a week now, which would be utopia before the update. That way I only need to take down a few of my neighbourhood gyms every night to claim "a reasonable amount of coins".
3x instinct gyms running 24/7, 10 miles away from here, cus nobody visits the rural location.
Im level 33 mystic and used to take em down during summer, but now its winter and cant access location cus dont have car.
Here in city i live next to gym and its been mystic since beginning of the game, this area is heavily populated by mystic.
Gym goes level 10 pretty easily and can hold for weeks.
If someone attacks i go defend.
Everyone alrdy know whats the case with this gym so it can stand level 10 quietly.
Then there is one more gym on other side of the city which constantly changes from instinct to mystic, because best players from both teams visit it every day, so it can never hold, no matter which team builds it up.
I would say: embrace the challenge as the Lone Ranger who breaks the status quo.
At the end of the day, the coins and Stardust from gyms are nice but not that big of a deal (holding 10 gyms for 1 period doesn't give you enough coin to buy a single incubator). Over time, it adds up if nobody is challenging the gyms.
You may find that as you knock them down, the opponent will eventually get sick of constantly building them back up. A bit of a war of attrition. I like the suggestion of doing it twice per day if you have the time.
Agree that you should attack the gyms multiple times per day and if you are high level and super dedicated, other players may join in since they see free spots...
Also, play in early mornings or during the work day since gyms tend to stagnate a lot during the work day since all the kids are in schools and adults are at work.
This gets lots easier at higher levels since your mons are a lot stronger (higher HP, better mons) and you aren't having to revive everything...
I think the big thing is to keep hitting the same gyms every day.
If people see a gym has lasted 2+ days before, they're more likely to put in the effort of training from 3 to 4/5/6/7 or even from 7 to 8/9/10. A lot of players won't spend much time training a gym if they know it's going to be taken before they can get the second collection from it (maybe the 2000 prestige training, but I'd guess very few people would train 8000 prestige knowing they'll lose the gym anyways - faster to go find another gym).
Pick your targets, and take them down every day. No matter what. Even if they're level 10 with elite defenders, you gotta take it down. Send the message: I'm claiming coins here every day, so don't bother training it up. Bonus points if you put the exact same defender in the same gym each time (would probably help if they recognize it's always the same guy). I think it will eventually go through and you'll encounter the gym at level 3 or less most days once you've established your "turf". Low level gyms are a breeze and without allies you won't establish a gym you can hold for days.
I agree hitting the same gym constantly. My area is 90 percent mystic and it seems that there is an understanding to let valor and instinct have their level 10 gym.
There will always be some rebellious players, but if they see you don't attack "their" gyms even when it's weak while taking yours back repeatedly they may cut you some slack. It took awhile for it to click for my fellow mystic players. Hope it works for you!
Back before the gym prestige update, we used to have an Instinct gym in my Mystic dominated neighbourhood that lasted for 3 weeks. As a concequence, I let Mystic build two of the others to lvl 10 and everyone was happy (Valor players usually hit the ones that turned every hour or so).
One day, three of the Mystic players who held the top spots in every Mystic gym in the area, tore down the Instinct gym. It was inevitable, I had to clear out every Mystic gym within my viewrange the very same evening, and I've made sure none of them have been lvl 10 since. I even hunted down several gyms around town belonging to the same 3 players. It's all about sending a message.
Nowadays I just claim my gyms after everyone have went to bed, and catch up on sleep in the weekends. It's the only way to claim them all without losing several gyms midway.
Yeah I might be a little rebellious at times (only because I have no permanent gyms these days).
The town I am in used to be 3 to 4 Mystic and 7 wall to wall team instinct gyms (which was pretty awesome for me). Not sure where those players went.
Team Valor (the team with still no permanent gyms in the town) really seems to hate team instinct and will go much out of their way to bring down every possible instinct gym. They never go into Mystic territory.
Look to edge of town for gyms that don't turn over as often. If you can claim one of those for your team, and constantly try to take it back and build it up as soon as possible if taken down, then the other teams might give up and let it stand for longer in between trying to take it.
If there are not enough players on your team in your local area, then try spreading out to neighboring areas a couple times a week looking for friendly colors. If you find some good areas with high friendly gyms that you might be able to hold for a while, write down on your phone's notes app the location and the pokemon you place in the gyms (CP and a unique name). Then when your pokemon get knocked out, you will know where to go back that you can reclaim a spot.
Man that was a rough day with like 5 separate people coming back over and over again to kick me out.
I even caught the guy who likes to put a small pokemon in the gym and train like crazy. I shut that down right way.
Later on fellow team members did come over, so it really paid off. Even some players that I haven't seen for ages.
