PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Wing Attack and Brave Bird are recommended for a Flying-type attacker role.
  • Sucker Punch and Payback perform less optimally, but can still be decent for Dark-type damage.
  • Ancient Power has no use.

PVE Overview

While a Pokemon with an amazing design behind it, Galarian Moltres is ironically the least valuable PvE attacker in its trio. An ATK stat that barely breaks 200 is unimpressive compared to existing attackers, and Payback is a poor move for PvE offense. As a Flying-type attacker, Kanto Moltres is miles ahead.

However, Galarian Moltres does have potential! In the main series, it has a Dark Type Signature Move by the name of Fiery Wrath, so it may yet have potential!

PvP Moveset Explanation

Wing Attack or Sucker Punch + Brave Bird and Payback

Both Fast Moves have identical stats, and thus either can be chosen depending on whether Dark or Flying coverage is preferred.

Brave Bird is the most useful Charge Move available, threatening massive damage with a moderately high energy cost and applying a self-debuff. Payback demands slightly more energy, but deals strong Dark-type damage if unshielded. Ancient Power is Galarian Moltres's lowest costing move, but it sacrifices a ton of coverage and damage and is generally not worth it.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 2 / 5

Galarian Moltres actually has a decent stat product, being comparable to Nidoqueen and Obstagoon. Its nuke-exclusive moveset holds it back, however. With many Pokemon in this league possessing spammier movesets, Galarian Moltres can struggle to keep up, and it doesn't have the insane bulk of Azumarill or Registeel to fully support that kind of playstyle. It also faces direct competition with Mandibuzz or XL Vullaby, with the latter even having access to Brave Bird.

Ultra League: 3 / 5

Thanks to the increased bulk in Ultra League, Galarian Moltres can reach its devastating nukes more consistently. In that sense, it can be even more threatening than Mandibuzz, as it packs enough damage to potentially overwhelm its counters when given farm opportunities. Though its heavy damage playstyle is inconsistent, Galarian Moltres's closing potential is still worthy of respect.

Master League: 2 / 5

Unfortunately, Yveltal exists, and does whatever Galarian Moltres wants to do but better. Its performance isn't even close to being as good as Yveltal's, taking away the potential of running an ABB style team with it and Yveltal.
