What's the fun in defense ?

Your Pokémon will most likely be gone the next day anyway .. am I the only one that feels this way ? I invest everything into attacking never defense ..

In Southern California a gym will never last more then a few hours so what's the point ? You win a few gyms & collect .. no point in putting so much effort in defensive Pokémon & their moves

I suspect there are people in SoCal that hold gyms longer than a day - they just take more time to find the stable gyms.

Im Mystic in Los Angeles county and Im in 12 gyms for over a week with little or no turnover. My GF is valor and shes also collecting 10 everyday with little turnover. If your big bad blue hmu ill give you some gyms to join lmao. I find gyms and then look for good vegan spots nearby and have dinner and drag my vegetarian valor GF to go into gyms on the way back. I know many here disapprove of my creep additions but unfortunately all 50 gyms spanning 3 cities near me are yellow spoofer gyms so I dont really have a choice. If Niantic stops spoofing i wont ever creep again but till that day it is what it is.

You do have a choice...she could take out the whole gym, and put hers in there.
...and vice versa.

You have a choice...you just choose to backstab team mates for your own convenience.

This sounds harsh...but you are making excuses as to why it is acceptable to be a ...

This is the worst player IMO...

Niantic, PLEASE fix prestige gains to kick out 1st mon at < 40k, then need to prestige 10k to put back 10th spot....

This will solve the spoofer taking gyms too...

This...and give the player(s) who did the work to prestige a period of time where only they can add a defender, to stop snipers...like it is for the attackers.

This. I'm sick of being "friendly" sniped.

Ive never spoofed and only have one account. Also these gyms I creep on are multiaccount spoofer gyms in huge mystic spoofer dominated areas and all the players on these gyms are creeped in and most are additional spoofer accounts. Why should a spoofer get 10 coin on all his accounts and I collect nothing?
Nevertheless this is an underhanded play I agree, but Im a symptom of a problem not the cause of it, at least IMO. I wish we could play the game as its intended but we cant but I truly look forward to that day. On the flip side my GF and I are constantly crippling and taking down level 10 yellow gyms so other smaller local players can collect but I cant stay in a local gym for even an hour. In fact I dont even place mons in gyms locally because the gym will stand longer if I dont place a mon in. I know that more legit players collect as a result of my play then lose collections. Not a rationalization or an excuse just a statement of fact and the way I play as a result of the meta I am in.

I could've sniped a gym someone was prestiging earlier this week...I recorded my screen and saw that someone with a name I "thought" was a spoofer put a mon at the top...afterwards. So easy to snipe since it takes much longer to exit battle, resort mon list, click click...

I also saw her sitting in a cafe prestiging it so even though I see her mons all the time at night and there are a whole clan of them (same name, just diff number after), I realize that maybe she doesn't always spoof since I saw her there sitting prestiging this week.

My point is a lot of times, we think it's a spoofer, but sometimes, maybe it's not since a lot of people actually like to hide and play (I know I do)...

Ultimately, you can be a d@$ and play the way you do and no one can stop you, but ultimately, I hope Niantic just FIXES this crap so d*@#$ don't ruin the game with crap like this...

The whole my g/f, brother/sister crap on another team is just lame and people who do that are just d*#(@...

Please fix Niantic.

Hate if you wanna hate but dont call me names unless you wanna fight. This is a discussion and i think many play the way i do. If you got a problem with the current game design email Niantic. I'm not the cause of the current state of play.

Are both of you guys cash players? Or do you play for free? My guess is you guys spend lots which affords you your noble play.

Anyways your right I don't care what you think, couldn't care less actually. I'm not driving 30 mins to a gym only to drive around in circles and only seeing level 10s. These are spoofer dominated areas and I'm gonna capitalize on this just like yellow players do where I live. I have 5k battle girl battles on my badge and I refuse to fight anymore against spoofers for gym collections. Niantic is at fault gyms are set this way, hate the game not the player.

So everyone around you is a spoofer...and that is your excuse.

You have no idea of they are a spoofer...and even if they are, them doing the wrong thing doesn't justify you doing the wrong thing.

You keep telling ourself that you are not part of the problem, if it makes you feel better.

It doesn't make me feel better, I already feel great about it already and yes I'm part of the problem. I have 5000 battles and 1200 trainings under my belt I know what a spoofer is. And yes all the areas with heavy pokestop and gym concentrations near Long beach and Santa Monica are very heavily spoofed. Logically speaking being in one of three best hunting areas in the world we attract tons of spoofers.

I don't live in SoCal but I spent a week in Huntington Beach last month. I still have a Pokémon in a gym there, and another lasted 2 weeks or so.

The key is to find strong level 6-9 gym and spend the time leveling them up. Place a mon as high as you can in the gym.

I was in Pennsylvania in December around Christmas and found a gym to put a Vaporeon in. It's still there....

Not true... I live in San Diego, which is obviously densely populated with a LOT of active players due to the near perfect year-round weather. The gyms are quite busy, yet I've had defenders stay for weeks in the same gyms. The idea is to find gyms that are kind of out of the way / inconvenient. Also, working with people on your team to take over and level up gyms makes it SO much faster and less resource-intensive.

I invest a lot in high CP defenders because the higher they are, the longer they take to get knocked out, and the more they'll deter attackers. And the better defensive movesets will make it that much more annoying to attackers. I like to make attackers' lives as miserable and annoying as possible, so even if they take down the gym, they'll have to spend a lot of time, revives, and potions. :)

I collect for 10 every day. I usually hold about 7-9 gyms overnight. You have to find good locations that are out of the way, and find good team-friendly neighbourhoods. No point in trying to put up a level 10 gym in the heart of enemy territory. But if you can find a local area/neighbourhood where you see lots of your own team putting up level 6-7 gyms, it can be worth it to bump them all the way to 10. Those kinds of areas can hold for a few days or even longer sometimes.

But all of the replies essentially support the op's premise: who cares about defensive move sets when it does not seem to factor into whether you can retain a gym or not?

I support this argument to a point. At the end of the day, it's all about which gyms you go into and how far down you can sit in it (cp.) anyone with time and potions can take down any gym since the gym meta is made for that. Having great defensive move sets might slow someone down for a sec, but at the end of the day, if they have made the time and arrangement to take the gym, they are going to do it regardless of what move sets your mon has.

I will say that defensive move sets have value in that those that you get that are not optimal attack move sets can be set aside for this purpose so you can always have your attackers handy. As for dust and candy investment, where you sit in the gym does factor into ability to stay in gyms so there is value in that....

I think the major contributor to deterring an attacker is gym level (i.e. time), but having ideal movesets on your attackers makes it more resource-heavy to take a gym down, discouraging players from taking additional gyms in the area and making their life more difficult in taking down the gym at hand.

A level 32+ player can often bust through any level 10 gym in this day and age. But whether they can afford to do that multiple times in a row depends on how many resources you drain from them each gym.

e.g. a Lick / Earthquake Snorlax can take less time to defeat compared with a ZH / Body Slam Snorlax. Lick Snorlax won't put much of a dent an attacker, and will allow them to use something like Machamp without getting punished (saving time). Zen Headbutt forces them to take longer per battle, and costs them more potions per battle.

This is why I keep harping that in the current gym meta, the most important thing is CP and naturally, IVs and level of trainer...I've been still hammering away at leveling and want to get to 34+ ASAP.

All these people who don't care about leveling, I think simply don't care/want/stay in gyms. If you do, you really NEED high CP since you will get shaved and I just saw a new gym shaver in my area (in every level 10 tower in 1 day, instantly...magically, kicked out 1 mon, put his level 36 *ss in all the gyms).

Both my maxed Blisseys also got crap moves and I didn't think for a second to max them out.

Like you and everyone agrees, defensive movesets are over analyzed and the number one thing keeping a gym from standing is it being a level 10 gym and you being in it at as high a CP as you can get. Level 10s take a lot longer than level 7s so the people willing to prestige the last 30k are probably the most "important" people on your team.

Blisseys, Snorlax, etc...are the best gym defenders due to time required...Rhydon actually hits much harder than Gyarados so more potions will be needed and if Gyarados has HP, it might never even fire I've noticed. Dragonites hit hard, but are easiy with even level 20 Lapras or Cloyster and have much lower hitpoints.

Unless you are in Tokyo or super heavy dense areas, for a lot of us, I'd guess our gyms do stay and I've been in one for probably 5 weeks+ (you can't drive to the gym, must walk at least 15 minutes+, etc...I love these gyms)...I can literally power my mon in that gym another 3+ levels already.

Yeah, attacking is more important because if they aren't in a gym you can use them for attacking but with defending movesets you can't use them for anything else.

I usually put a mon in a gym and don't see it for weeks on end, though.

You have a point. Nothing will stop a determined attacker(s) from taking down a gym. I just put a high CP Pkmn into a friendly gym to selfishly hold a top spot and be done with it.

I, too, invest only in my offensive Pokemon. Never truly cared about "optimal" defensive moves. They also change unpredictably, look what happened to Water Pulse.
