Understanding IV numbers and percentages

Is a pokemon with an IV number of 15 in one or two categories (i.e. ATT or DEF) good at attacking or defending a gym even if it's total IV percent is in the 70's? Are moves more important than IV stats?

In my opinion..

  1. moves >> IVs
  2. It depends on the pokemon; generally, a pokemon benefits from having IVs in stats which are it's weakest, compared to its other stats; it's relative.

Example: Cloyster has amazing defense but mediocre attack and poor stamina/hp. In this case, it would be ideal for Cloyster to have higher attack and defense values.

Cloyster's stats (atk/def/sta): 186/323/100.
I BELIEVE* the way IVs work is that when a pokemon is maxed out (i.e. cloyster), it will have those stats PLUS it's IV values.

So in this example, a cloyster would benefit more from having stamina IV's compared to defense IV's, as 323 def / 115 sta is more ideal than 338 def / 100 sta.

Another example: I have a chansey with (atk/def/sta): 15/15/6. I chose to evolve it because it was already a high level upon catching it (less candies) and a lack of hp IV's wont make a significant difference as it has perfect attack and defense.

I agree. When choosing pokemon to power up or evolve, I look for at least good IVs that cover its weakest base stats.

Stat = ( base_stat + stat_IV ) * CP_multiplier

The right IVs bolstering a weaker base stat can make a pokemon more usable. For pokemon that are lower than the top couple tiers though, I want high IVs all around for them to be able to compete as best as possible.

The main exception that I now look for is pokemon that will evolve to a good CP for prestiging and have low Atk IV and high Def and Stm IV -- in order to increase their tankiness as much as possible without pushing up CP too much.

Every pokemon has base stat numbers. IV stats are simply bonus numbers added onto base stats. Having the best moves are WAY more important. There's only a 10% performance difference between a pokemon with 0/0/0 bonus IV compared to one with perfect 15/15/15.

The relative difference between 0/0/0 and 15/15/15 depends on the base stats. The difference is smaller for bigger base stats.

IV is just an addition of values into one pokemon's base stats. e.g, jolteon base stamina 130, one has iv hp15, this means the hp of this jolteon is calculated at the base stamina 145.

Based on my own experience, I would say it depends on the mons role: if attacker: move > iv; if defender: iv (=cp) > move.

Reason: Attackers with good movesets save time and potions, which is worth more than higher cp imo. On the other hand, Defenders with higher cp get a higher place in the gym which ultimately is all that matters.

At least as far as I am concerned, I make my decisions to attack gyms always based on the premise that all mons in that gym have an optimal def moveset, meaning that if i decide to attack a gym, i will take it down all the way. Discovering that a mon has worse moves than expected is merely a bonus.

IV is 4 in roman numerals. just add 4 to everything. even if it doesn't make sense!
