Two CPs per pokemon

This may have been discussed before but is there any reason Pokemons CP can't be calculated differently when it's a defender? We all know Attack is weighted the highest when it comes to CP. Why can't there be two sets of CP values? One for Attack and one for gym Defense? Would provide more CP for Lapras after nerf and such when it is on defense? Is this idiotic? Would it provide more gym variety or would it be too hard to implement? Also see Umbreon and Poliwrath. They boosted damage of charge moves, why not increase the possibility of tanks outside of Blissey?

if cp were changed to represent defensive mons, blissey would get the biggest advantage. attack gets more value vs def or stamina because you don't really want defensive mons at the top of the gym. that obviously doesn't seem logical, but if you are the one attacking in, you don't want your opponents strongest defenders on top.

I really see your point actually but maybe in a different way than you intended. It would not be in the spirit of the Pokemon games for a gym to just be full of defensive type pokemon! Thanks! Though it would still be nice to see some sort of variety and not just the same old stuff :).

CP is proportional to the product of a mon's ATK stat and the geometric average of it's DEF and STA stats. That is to say its ATK(STA^0.5)(DEF^0.5). Essentially this means that ATK carries 50% of the weight while the other two stats determine 25% of the weight in determining CP value. In terms of actual combat effectiveness however, each stat holds close to equal value. I think STA is the only one that actually holds more than the others due to the fact that taking X damage grants you X energy and high STA mons reap more benefits from that on top of the base benefit of STA. If you're suggesting that each stat be represented equally when determining CP I agree. This could be done by making it scale with ATKSTADEF as opposed to ATK(STA^0.5)(DEF^0.5).

I hope that helps!

Wow once again some really good information! Not exactly what I was asking but you've really given good insight on cp vs stat effectiveness! I was actually theorizing a scenario where each Pokemon had two completely different calculated CPs. One for when it is on your attacking team... and another for when it is a gym defender. But from what you guys have responded with it sounds silly and untrue to the nature of pokemon games. I just wish there was a bit more variety :).

You mean they would have different stats on defense than on attack? That's an interesting idea! I don't know if they would ever do that but it would be interesting. But at least you can use you can use a lot of different Pokemon when prestiging :)
