BenTimm has trouble throwing curveballs at really long range (i.e. for Dragonites etc.) otherwise he always does.
I love the long range curveballs, my favorite to throw. I find I can nail the great throws a good 80% of the time. The hardest ones I find are getting great curveballs on things like Pidgys, Kabutos, Omanyte etc. that are super close. Yeah I can curveball but they are so close it is difficult to get a great throw all the time.
If you youtube trainer tips he shows how to throw a curveball. He uses his thumb but I hold the phone in one hand and use my index finger on my other hand to spin the ball and throw a long curve ball. To throw it farther just make sure your "follow through" is longer. It takes time but I find I can replicate the farther ones better/more often than the short throws when the 'mon is close.
Long throws it is all about the follow through. And it doesn't have to be fast. I repeat it doesn't have to be extra fast to throw it far. Just make sure it is a long follow through and it will go farther.

For longer curve balls I've found doing diagonal shaped curves works better than just spinning the ball in a circle to get it spinning.
Hold phone in your off hand. Use your dominant hand thumb (or index finger) and start spinning the ball from the bottom corner of the phone, spinning toward the opposite top corner in oval shape rings, and as another poster said, follow through all the way to the top of your screen.
