Outrage+Draco Meteor=better DPS/TDO?

I have a 96% 15 atk LV40 Dragonite from the original community day. I've stubbornly kept Draco Meteor despite Outrage having better power on average. However, looking at another topic talking about adding Outrage to an existing Dragonite got me thinking:

How would Draco Meteor and Outrage together perform?

My main understanding of the Draco Meteor/Outrage debate is that Draco Meteor actually has better power, but the loss of energy from a 1 bar VS a 2 bar makes it less usable and gives it lower damage realistically. But what about throwing in a Dragonite and opening up with Draco Meteor spam, then switching to Outrage at low HP to waste as little power as possible? I know that the actual damage increase would likely be negligible if it exists at all, but it's still something that I am curious about, and am not sure how to calculate it exactly.

It absolutely is better than having either just OR or just DM, but requires a lot of awareness and maybe a bit of practice to get optimal gains out of it. For example, if you do DM with the intention of doing one last OR, but die before the OR, it would have been better to do 2 OR instead.

EDIT: For raids obviously. Dragonite without DB and/or DC isn't a great idea for PvP.

For what purpose? For raids, your idea sounds good, as raid boss charge moves are fairly predictable, and you should be able to time the switch pretty well. That's a lot of candy and dust to spend on a very modest possible DPS increase, though.

For PvP, I would think it would be better to add a move of a different type (e.g. hurricane) so as to get wider coverage against potential opponents.

I guess it makes sense if you can afford the dust and candy. I hadn't thought about this before, but I have a DT/DC Dragonite, that I could do something similar with, i.e. add outrage. Getting off even one or two outrages before switching to DC would almost certainly improve DPS over DC alone.

I was actually wondering this too. I have a lucky shiny Dragonite with Draco Meteor that I couldn't bring myself to getting rid of.

I might end up doing this if Palkia comes into play so it's not a total waste. If I can tell Palkia is packing its own Draco Meteor I can just use Outrage to try and get max damage before going down. If it has either other move I'll likely be able to use one Draco Meteor then switch over to using Outrage to play it safe.

inb4 PvP concerns: I lack any capacity of legacy Dragonite so my hopes of using one are pretty much dashed.

I wish the next months of research are legacy dragonite, I think people would like those a lot more that the continued reruns of the bird trio and beasts, or just ditch them so we can only get lugia or ho-oh.

Can agree with you there. They are good for PvP, and a lot of people I know didnt get the entry for one or both.

The need for rurals, busy solo players and people who were taking a break to get legendaries they're missing is MUCH larger than anyone's need to get a legacy Dragonite.

But I absolutely agree about ditching the beasts and (Edit: Kanto) birds, I think 2 months should be plenty since they already had their initial runs as breakthroughs.

By birds and beasts, I assume you mean specifically the Kanto trio of birds? While they've had more runs as raid bosses this is the first time Lugia and Ho-Oh have been in the box.

I was going to say something similar to this. Research breakthroughs are something of a catch-up mechanic for people who missed out on certain legendaries. Handing out non-legendaries flies in the face of that, and as I type this I realize is probably partially why people were upset about Body Slam Snorlax.

Yeah, meant Kanto birds of course, good catch.

I agree that the responses to BS Snorlax illustrated well why legacy non-legendaries aren't that good of an idea. Ultimately the excitement about them is tiny compared to people who get a shot at a legendary that they're missing from the pokedex.

To be fair a majority of the responses at the time stemmed from "I walked 500 miles and I would walk 500 more to max out my Snorlax with sub-par IV's so why do people get handed a better one for free?!?" and less about the boxes being used for legendary fillers.

Between that incident and Shedinja though I agree, the breakthrough isn't the best avenue to reintroduce legacy movesets. Legendary candy > legacy move. More importantly for those who need it, dex entry >>> legacy move.
