What are legacy charge moves?

I was looking at the Gengar page to determine which Gengars I should keep based on moveset. However, no movesets with Sludge Wave in them were ranked/rated, so idk whether to keep these guys.

I scrolled down to look at DPS and whatnot hoping that would help me make a decision and I noticed that Sludge Wave wasn't in the Charge Move category, but rather in the Legacy Charge Move category. What does this mean?

Legacy moves are moves the Pokemon could learn in the past but they removed them from their kit. The ones that have it can keep it but you cannot learn them anymore.

Niantic changed the possible movesets for some Pokemon a while back:

So Sludge Wave was removed from Gengar's possible moveset. Existing Pokemon moves won't change, but all new Pokemon - caught, hatched, evolved - no longer have access to these legacy moves. A Gengar with Sludge Wave is now we termed as legacy Pokemon.

If/when trading gets implemented, legacy Pokemon would probably be considered rarity, and probably holds a bit of value.

Regardless of merit, keep hold of it!

Yeah, our coverage of legacy movesets are kind of spotty. I'll add that to our meta research team's to-do this!
