Is it Even Worth Using Crunch?

So I ran into this question a while ago when a person I was raiding with didn't use his Ttar charge moves at all (Crunch and Stone Edge). When I asked why, he said that it seemed like the charge moves took so long to complete that he could just as easily do the same amount of damage in the same amount of time using several fast moves (Bite, in this case). However, this player was only a level 28 or something like that, so I'm not sure I really trust their technical advice all that much. (I myself was about level 32 or 33 at the time, I think.)

It does make me wonder, though: Does Crunch do enough damage to justify taking a break from all those Bites to fire it off, or is it actually a really bad move that would be better off leaving behind? Stone Edge and other one- or two-bar moves I can see doing enough damage to justify their use, but Crunch and other three-bar moves make me wonder.

Yes. Bite has a power per second of 12, whereas Crunch has a power per second of nearly 22. In general, using your charge move will be a better use of time than continuing to use your fast move - I can't think of an example where this isn't true, but if there is one, the Pokemon with that moveset has no business in your raid teams anyway.

Continuing to charge up your bar to avoid overkill/drop several charge moves on the next mon is the main reason not to use a charge move straight away. Given that a raid boss is just one opponent, no sense not using it straight away.

When solo raiding (does work on gym battles but less useful), you sometimes want to keep charging to control the boss's energy gain. Firing 100 energy worth of charge moves back to back can be used to overfill the boss's energy bar, whereas firing them as soon as they become available may risk the boss using their one bar charge move earlier.

Before the Gen2 move rebalance, there were in fact some charge moves that were so bad we were better off just using the fast move. Vaporeon with Water Gun/Water Pulse sticks out in my memory. If we stopped to use Water Pulse, then we lost DPS.

The Gen2 release included a massive sweeping power buff to all charge moves, partly to deal with Blissey. Now all charge moves have higher neutral DPS than all fast moves.

Differing type advantages between mistyped fast and charge moves can still have some cases where a fast move will be better in a particular matchup. But for a monotyped moveset like Bite/Crunch, the charge move will be stronger.

Water pulse was ok. Anything that held a 5 bar move like Twister and Icy wind was worse than just using the fast move.

Unless the charge move is resisted there’s little to no chance of it not being worth to use nowadays.

I think this was fixed long before gen 2. It may have been with the original stat rebalance in November 2016.
