Mewtwo raids; another smart Niantic money grab?

They have released it with new moves, which players immediately get interested in. "Gotta get one with each move!" and all that.

But they have not released shiny Mewtwo. So the door is open for this in future, a massive Mewtwo community day which will make Niantic as rich as Wal-mart. I'll be there, you'll be there, everyone gonna be there for our green Mewtwo friend.

This is a smart ploy, releasing Mewtwo in a way that will make heaps of money whilst withholding the shiny variant, knowing full well players will spend money on that aswell. At the same time the moves they've given Mewtwo will not significantly change the meta; avoiding accusations of power creep. I imagine Niantics coffers were a bit drier than normal after three months of Regis. The cash is already rolling in again.

Personally i'm less interested in this release than i would have been if they'd released shiny Mewtwo now, only done a couple thus far. But for the majority of players this is not the case.

I think the shiny will be released with Psystrike during some event/community day like we saw with the legendary birds. They have enough time to slowly roll out legendaries with new moves and shiny variants to keep people raiding and for several Pokémon to powercreep above Pokémon that power creeped them before.

For example, Groudon. Groudon will likely be surpassed as a ground-type attacker in gen 4 by Garchomp, possibly Rhyperior, and possibly Mamoswine. After that happens, Groudon’s shiny form will probably be released alongside Precipice Blades.

The same goes for Kyogre with Origin Pulse, Rayquaza with Dragon Ascent, etc.

Groudon or Kyogre with those moves will trivialize nearly every other attacker in the game, so i assume those moves would be nerfed. Otherwise, makes perfect sense for Niantic to release them like that, along with Shiny Ray.

Groudon is gonna get surpassed (until its shiny release) by gen 4 pokemon, though Kyogre is not. Surprised they didn't give Kyogre weaker moves like Groudons to start with, could have given it bubblebeam instead of hydro pump.

Those gen 4 pokemon need good movesets to outclass Groudon. None of them can compete with it in raw base attack.

Rayquaza with Dragon Ascent is a little different since the move is actually flying type, contrary to its name. I agree though, I think they'll let new Pokemon have their fun for a while before ramping up the broken meter with PB and OP.

So when exactly did harrytipper2 quit being the most hated person on this forum and start playing again? I haven't seen the old you for quite a while now and I'm still amazed.

I made a post some weeks ago saying i was playing again, because Niantic have improved the game to the point where i'm interested again. So, there's your answer :) My personal life is also in a better place than before, so i'm likely in a better mood when i post things. I still remain one of Niantics biggest critics when they do something wrong, or go for a blatant cash grab :P

The game is a lot better now than at the start of this year (which is not saying much.)

I posted something, I thought, but for some reason it never came through.

Anyway, glad to see the tables have turned and you picked up the game again. Nice to see people behavior can change. Ive started recently for the event again to hatch Tauros which I succeeded. Boredom is kicking in already again unfortunately, cant see myself playing for much longer.

They have done this for each one of the legendaries. One general release, one second round including the shiny form and finally a limited time with special move. The only difference is that they added new moves to reward those who caught an EX Mewtwo.

There are 32 days to catch one Mewtwo/day = 160 free candy. Plus IB is the strongest ice attacker currently available.

Shiny and Psystrike will be a definite release later on, but I think the big cash grab for niantic in this isnt the raid passes, its the storage increase (though passes and incubators do generate a lot of money). Theres a lot of gen 1 pokemon that are fantastic but otherwise hard to come by, namely Rhydon, dratini, lapras and chansey and with those being more frequent as well as October likely to have a double candy event, they likely think players will be stocking up on these pokemon to trade/junk when the double candy happens, stocking up means you may need to buy more storage space (even just for the mewtwo, 30 mewtwo is almost a full storage upgrade and people are catching a lot more than just the mewtwo to save)

Agree that storage it's becoming an issue since trading was implemented. Last CD I only had 25 free slots to catch new pokemon.
I store possible useful trades, luckies and legendaries... Now you have two opportunities of getting a good Mewtwo, first when you catch it at the raid and second when you trade it for another one.

YEah, I have a friend who on the Larvitar day released none of them to mass release when October came around, when the trading was added, and he told me how rough it was to keep that many pokemon without spending cons/money to increase storage. Likely we're doing the same when the next good CD 10k pokemon come

From my perspective, this month's release of Mewtwo has been one of the greatest things Niantic has done. My town does not have an EX eligible gym. We got one raid in the very early stages of the test period, so I got my 78% 14 attack Mewtwo (that I maxed anyway) and I was thrilled. I got a second Mewtwo during the bugged EX pass release for a gym that I spun once 60 miles from my home. Thankfully, a generous friend was able to raid it for me so I got another with basically identical IVs.

In the meantime, any mention of EX raids and Mewtwo was just frustrating as I knew I never had a chance of getting another. However, in the past 3 days, I've gotten 7 Mewtwo and caught 6 with a Pinap berry. I've never had more fun at a level 5 raid and the raid scene in my small town hasn't been this active since last summer. All in all, this weekend has been awesome for Pokemon Go.

TL;DR this money grab is working. Niantic, take my money.

Can you not use TM to get the moves you want???

You can use TM to obtain the current moves: psychic, focus blast, thunder bolt, flame thrower and ice beam. Shadow ball and hyper beam are no longer available.

My raiding community has been going ham on Mewtwo raids since the day it dropped. Pretty much any plan involving a widespread Mewtwo release will print money for Niantic; the casual players who have been burned by the EX system have a full month+ to bag a few and those of us who had multiple from the start will get extra candies to dump into them, especially now that you get 5 per catch. While it hurts to see it go, making Shadow Ball (and to a much lesser extent, Hyper Beam) legacy was a nice nod to people who have been able to make EX raids.

Speaking of the EX front, people have said that having Deoxys will hurt raid pass sales going toward EX chances. Having a high-demand boss like Mewtwo lead the T5 scene pretty much negates any potential "loss" they might have incurred. With the revisions to the EX system as well (tagged gyms, sharable passes) I think we'll see more people actively trying for passes as well.

I've been pretty critical about some of Niantic's methods before but I gotta give credit where it's due.
