If I had to guess, I'd say that we won't be seeing gen 4 at least until Regirock has left the raid scene on Sept 20th. I'm hoping we get some other legendary raid boss for a return run (Groudon or Rayquaza would be wonderful) to help tide people over, but I'm not holding my breath. As for the ultra unlock, my bets are still on Mewtwo Day. Or maybe a global release of Smeargle (who was finally added into the code a month or so ago).
Gen 4 release countdown clock?
I'm guessing that Niantic is helping trainers prepare for Gen 4 evolutions, and I'm wondering if it could be a countdown clock.
As the guide "New Gen 4 Evolutions" pointing out, there are 22 evolutions of pokemons we already have from first 3 generations. Among them, Rhydon, Tangela, Electabuzz, Piloswine, Roselia, Kirlia, Magmar, Porygon, have taking turns to be picked as raid bosses. Eevee just had its CDs and also has been a research reward. Besides, Lickitung, Magmar, Electabuzz, Misdreavus have been picked as research rewards.
What has been left are like Murkrow, Magnemite, Sneasal, Gligar, Nosepass, Togepi, Aipom and snorunt. Among those Murkrow is almost everyday everywhere I honestly won't even give it try if it's not shiny. Togepi has always been a 2km hatchable pokemon. Gligar, Nosepass, Aipom and snorunt evolutions are mostly just dex filler. Only Magnemite and Sneasal need some more preparation (have they also been research rewards? I cannot remember clearly).
To conclude, with this most recent update of raid boss list and introduction of Tangela, Roselia and return of Rhydon, Niantic should be very close to release Gen 4. I would guess the finish of the last global challenge could be a very promising timing and match the expectation of the ultra bonus.
