Mission report: Community day without beeing able to go out hunting.
I learned on the eve of community day that I would not be able to go out hunting during the 3-hour slot. I would be stuck in a house. I was not prepared for this but I still managed to fulfill a minimal set of objectives and in the end I am happy with how it turned out. So I figured I could share this with you and maybe get some opinions from you so that next time one of us isn't able to hunt during CD, one can still get the max out of what little one can do.
First step: counting your resources.
OK, so I won't be able to hunt but I will still be able to open the app. I just need to evolve Pupitars during the time slot so I can have a Smack Down Tyranitars. How many can I do? I have one level 20 Pupitar with nice IVs (15/14/12 A/D/S, evolved from a hatched Larvitar during a mass evolve session), 62 Larvitar candies and 13 rare candies. Dammit, that's not enough, now I whish I did not power up my Mewtwo earlier this week! But ok I can have 75 Larvitar candies, if I can catch 4 pinapped Larvitars I will be able to evolve my Pupitar. I have only a dozen of pinap berries though, so better use those ultra balls in priority. I set a Tyranitar as my buddy to try to get more candies in the meantime.
Second step: set objectives.
I want at least one Tyranitar with Smack Down, so in the future I have one top DPS rock-type mon. Waiting future rock-type pokemons, my Golems, my B/SE Tyranitar, water gun Omastars and Sudowoodos (heh!) can fill my rock teams. If I am lucky enough, I'll get a shiny and keep it, I can evolve it later as a trophy when my fighting capable Tyranitars will be powered up. If I can catch enough Larvitars to get 125 candy, no need to burn rare candies and I can evolve a Larvitar instead of my Pupitar. Forget about raids, I'll need to do everything alone. I know there's no point trying to go further than these objectives, I can't catch enough Larvitars to evolve another Smack Down Tyranitar. So I'll socialize and enjoy the time I will have IRL and forget about the running community day after those objectives are met.
Third step: schedule.
I need to stay alert. I may have an opportunity to go out for a walk but if I can't, I should make sure I can get a GPS signal and then I'll crack an incense. While standing still, an incense will grant you 6 spawns in 30min. That's enough for me, as long as they are Larvitars. I also need to check the IVs or my caught Larvitars regularly. I need to stop trying 5 or 10 minutes before the end of the event at the latest and evolve the best candidate then.
Fourth step: Go!
During the time slot, I have been able to take a 10 minute walk outside. I used it as much as I could and cracked an incense to maximize the benefits. I caught a handful of Larvitars but I also noticed that there were way less Larvitar spaws in proportion than what I could imagine considering previous community days, despite weather boost. It was enough to evolve my Pupitar but I still hoped to save those rare candies and I hoped for a better evolution candidate. So when I came back, I renamed my best Larvitars and my Pupitar with their IVs and went on with my real life business. My phone was on in my pocket, I checked it every now and then to catch the occasional incense spawn and crack another one if necessary. Larvitars represented 30-50% of incense spawns. Not what I hoped, but at this pace that was enough. I knew I now had enough candies, I just hoped for a better candidate. In the last half hour of the event, I was lucky enough to meet a shiny Larvitar! Not very high level, crappy IVs below 50%, but it didn't matter, it was the trophy I needed. When my incense was out, 10-15min before the end of the event, I looked at my Larvitars and noticed no one matched the IVs of my Pupitar, despite some interesting high level candidates and a troll (0/15/15 A/D/S, heh!). So I evolved my Pupitar, saving 25 candies that will be much needed to power it up anyway, and I got my desired smack down Tyranitar! It got Fire blast. Dammit, I'm out of charge TMs... Well, I'll get some eventually.
Assessment:
One smack down Tyranitar: check. Shiny Larvitar: check. Bonus: additional Larvitars and about 20 Larvitar candies.
Teachings:
In case it happens again, in the future make sure you have 6 incense before any community day (I did already) and save the candies! I did not think it was necessary because I relied on many Larvitar spawns during CD and did not aim for 6 Tyranitars anyway. Wrong! See those Squirtle and Totodile out during the water event? Catch'em! Get 125 candies of each while you can and keep the best one!
Cheers!

I had to miss the first 50 min of CD in a similar scenario as you, so I put 2 incense in at home...one incense spawn got me a level 10: 14a/13/15. I already had a level 33: 10a/14/14 and 165 candies waiting, evolved those two the minute I could. That took the pressure off during the quality 90 min I had to find: level, IV, shiny
