PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Rock Throw is generally superior to Counter for the Rock-type coverage and STAB.

  • Rock Slide edges out Stone Edge in relevant matchups due to good power for multiple bars.

  • Rock Tomb is inferior.

  • Earthquake and Trailblaze are sub-par.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Rock Throw is preferred to Counter on defense for superior type coverage and general power.

  • Rock Slide is preferred to Stone Edge for the quicker charge time.

  • Trailblaze is another great option for defense.

  • Rock Tomb is slower and weaker.

  • Earthquake, despite having good synergy with Rock, is easy to dodge and too slow to charge.

PVE Overview

Sudowoodo is your budget Golem, who is a budget Tyranitar, who is a budget whatever's meta at the moment. Rock-type is coveted for its effectiveness against Fire, Ice, and Flying-types, but Sudowoodo is far too outclassed to be worth mentioning in any relevant raid.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Counter + Rock Slide and Earthquake

Virtually any Pokemon blessed with Counter will have it at the top of their PVP moveset list. It has fantastic coverage and sports 4 DPT (Damage per Turn) and 3.5 EPT (Energy Per Turn), making the highest performing move in the PVP meta on average.

Rock Slide provides Sudowoodo with a great STAB move that has high power for a reasonable amount of energy. Stone Edge deals more damage, but its greater energy cost is discouraging. Earthquake rounds out this moveset by providing good coverage next to Rock Slide while being an objectively strong move despite its higher energy cost. The addition of Rock Tomb following the GBL Season 10 update is unimpressive, as its poor damage output and high energy cost discourages its use despite its new debuff utility.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 2 / 5

Sudowoodo has access to some great moves and a decent stat-spread, which means it can definitely operate in the Great League. Rock-type coverage is always in demand, and Sudowoodo can deliver it along with also-coveted Ground type coverage, and the stellar Counter as its quick move. However, other Pokemon in the tier such as Bastiodon and Probopass surpass it in terms of general utility. That said, Sudowoodo's pure rock typing leaves it without a double-weakness to Ground and Fighting, which can make it a better fit for some teams.

Ultra League: 2 / 5

Getting closer to 2500 with the advent of Level 50 has helped Sudowoodo somewhat, and yet it still has issues. Notable wins against Pokémon like Talonflame, Galvantula, and even Empoleon make Sudo somewhat tempting. However, it just doesn't quite cut it in the format.

Master League: 0 / 5

Sudowoodo finds itself in the same situation that it did in the Ultra League, but a bit worse. Forego Sudowoodo for a better Pokemon.
