Mew Quest/Magikarp evolve

I've reached that stage, and pretty much have nothing available but junk.

A couple of Level 20's, an 82% with 13 attack and an 87% with 12 attack.

A couple Level 25's, both 62% with 15 attack.

A level 15 that is either 91% or 96%.

Alternative is a level 7 Shiny, that is under 40%.

Current water attackers:

96% Level 30, WF/HP Kyogre
93% Level 30, WF/HP Gyarados
98% Level 30, WG/WP Vaporeon
87% Level 20, WF/HP Kyogres (2).

Do I need another good Gyarados? Or would you evolve a Red Gary just to have a Red Gary?

[Account hit Level 33 this morning. 250K dust and 783 Karp Candies.]

Kyogre's DPS puts Gyarados's to shame, so you probably don't need another good Gyarados, given the water Mons you listed. That said, Karps seem to be spawning like crazy during this event, so if you're willing to be patient, I'd say the odds are good that you'll come across a good one.

Otherwise, if you'd prefer to move your special research along sooner rather than later, personally, I'd evolve the shiny. Just because red Gyarados looks amazing.

This is what I understand:

You dont need another water pokemon
You have enough candies to evolve 2 magikarps
You dont have red gyarados
All your current magikarps are garbage

The answer is simple: get the shiny gyarados as a trophy. If you end up catching a 100% magikarp, you will still have enough to evolve and power up.

Evolve the shiny and be done with it, it's not like the others are super good anyway.

Evolving the low level Shiny is what I have done. A Red Gyarados' most important role is to be placed in a gym as a showcase trophy. Now, a Gyarados is never a good defender. But a low-level one can at least be a slowly decaying defender. In this role its low IVs also do not matter.

Did the same evolution of lower level and lower IV shiny (still lucky enough to be 2nd tier) rather than top tier higher level and higher IV. Found 100 IV non-shiny during this event that will eventually be evolved and powered. Feeling pretty good about the way this worked out.

Gyarados were key during Groudon raids - the double resistance to ground was critical, and better than Kyogre's single resistance. (Kyogre still is better overall against Groudon, but not by a lot.)

I used my Red Gyarados between the two blue ones, so that I could tell how far through them I was - three in a row, and one can easily lose track, but blue/red/blue is easy to remember.

Given that the Mew research is the only one that we'll have for months or years, there's no such need to raise the pace.
Take your time, and find an amazing 35 level Karp.
The current event is on your side.
