Is this for attacking only? Cause defense is still a thing despite what some people say (they are wrong) and no type spells out relevance in defense like normal types. Just Blissey alone has total domination over what makes a decent defense, and the next best 4 are also normal types. MY ranking of type relevance goes like this based on my experience (accounting for local biomes, gym activity, and current and near-future raid bosses):

1. Normal - Blisslaxchanking
2. Fighting - Machamp to counter those fatasses
3. Dragon - Just for stats and neutral field alone
4. Dark - For Lugia (and the occasional Mewtwo I guess)
5. Rock - Versatile Golem usage; best dragon sweeper under most common weather here
6. Electric - Raikou is a god among heathens
7. Water - Sometimes you need a Kyogre
8. Fire - Sometimes you need a Moltres
9. Ground - Sometimes you need a Groudon
10. Psychic - Meh, I guess Mewtwo sees some use, but not for being a Psychic type.
11. Ghost - Some people like to glass cannon things
12. Ice - Awful DPS options but quite useful in general 'cause Nintendo loves their dragon legendaries
13. Fairy - Welp, sometimes you need a Gardevoir
14. Steel - Hm...
15. Grass - Second best option to things weak against Kyogre
16. Bug - This is getting hard to justify...
17. Flying - I guess some people still solo Machamp in March 2018
18. Poison - Where do I start... As an -until now- primarily defensive type, these fellas always see the short end of the stick in regards to what they can do and who they can fend off. If status becomes a thing someday, we might see these gain some relevance.

Sorry, I edited in a lot of additional text after I posted that.
Why ignore Groudon tho?

Because Groudon is very much powerful compared to the next best Ground attacker. So, it doesn't represent the relevance of the type. Same reason for ignoring Lugia. All other Flying types are simply terrible! Well, in case of analyzing the flying type Rayquaza needs to be ignored as well. Since 2 good Pokémon can't completely represent a type. Besides, Flying type doesn't have much use either. Psychic is a much better counter to Fighting; Fire is more used to counter Grass and Bug and Water is a much better counter to Ground.

Well, you can not use that as an argument, just to remove Lugia, flying-rayquaza and Groudon.

There are many other types that have one really good performer that outshines the rest. Some of them, like legacy Gengar, are far from easy to get.

Water - Kyogre
Fairy - Gardevoir
Poison - Muk
Dark - Tyranitaur
Normal - Blissey (defender)
Electric - Raikou
Ghost - Gengar (SC/SB)
Psychic - Mewtwo

Neither I understand why we should ignore Groudon?
It is a superior Ground type, and for many people it was much easier to come by than a decent Rhydon (just like Kyogre vs Gyarados).

When that is said, my gut filling is close to your list, Bellick.

I'd swap Dragon and Dark, move electric to 8, and drop poison to the bottom. (I can't remember the last time I used poison for anything.) Otherwise, pretty close.

Really? What else do you use dark types than for Lugia? I have plenty of Ttar than are needed about once per day AT MOST.

Jinx, Gengar, Alakazam, or Starmie solos. There is always one or two of them in the Tier 3 rotation. You mentioned Lugia. Mewtwo is also countered by dark type.
I guess if you do a lot of tier 4 raids you won't get much use.

Why in the world is dragon #2?

Good question. Dragon is one of the few types almost without super-effective damage and windy weather boost also is quite rare. Then, even with an attack of 270 it does just as much damage as a 160 Attack with super-effective + weather bonus.

High neutral damage by top contenders against most common types, coupled with numerous resistances. It's like asking why Mewtwo is so valued. If the best dragon types sported around the same sats as Flygon, I would question this too, but they don't. In fact, the top 3 dragons don't even need to inflict super effective damage to regularly rank among the best counters for most raid bosses. I don't understand your confusion.

But isn't this a ranking of the types themselves? Not the Pokemon that are the those types. Yes, Dragonite, Salamence, and Rayquaza are obviously all very good Pokemon, but that shouldn't mean that their typings are good.

This kind of list needs a quantitative approach. One needs to average/max/sum all Pokémon of a type by bulk and then rank the types. Then for each of these defending types, calculate the effective DPS or TDO of attackers of any type, and rank the collective DPS or TDO by type.

Which types have I used most often since last summer?
( I also suspect we will see all previous legendary and some other raid bosses will come back once in a while in the future)

These I use regularly every day
1. Normal (best defenders)
2. Fighting (best gym attacker, many raid bosses)
3. Dragon (2nd best gym attacker, great raid filler)
4. Electric (3rd best gym attacker, Water bosses)

These I use once in a while, great specialists
5. Dark (Solo-Alakazam, Mewtwo, Lugia, Ttar is a good filler)
6. Water (Solo-Ninetails/Claydol, Groudon, Entei, Moltres, Ho-Oh)
7. Rock (Legendary birds, often weather boosted)
8. Psychic (Occasional Machamp stopper in gyms, Solo-Machamp/Gengar)
9. Fire (Very fast at some low lvl raids, backup at Articuno)
10. Ghost (Solo-Alakazam, Claydol, Mewtwo, only use Gengar)
11. Ice (great at flying/dragon raids, we will get more of them)
12. Ground (Jolteon, Raikou, Zapdos)
13. Grass (Great backup for Groudon, Kyogre, Suicune, Vaporeon)

Only use these when I want some variety
14. Fairy (Occasionally used Gardevoir in gyms and some raids)
15. Flying (I like psychic more at Machamp raids, Lugia is boring)
16. Steel (Never found use for this)
17. Bug (Neither this)
18. Poison (I like the animation to Gunk Shot)
