Unexpected Ex-Raid Passes for Low-Level Trainers. Do We Need to Prepare?

Me and my kid in elementary school play Pokemon Go together, usually on our way back from school and other classes. Our accounts at at level 28 and 18. We play casually and never really expected the ex-raid invitations but now we both got the invitations for the park right in front of the school. We've never raided with others and usually wouldn't even consider participating but it seems like we should at least see if it's worthwhile and have questions.

Looking at Pokebattler and this site, our best potential counters are two double dark ~50% Houndooms and two double bug Pinsirs all around level 20. We do have two level 30 Alakazams, C/FS and PC/SB, followed by some Eeveelutions and a Bite/PR Granbull all around level 30. Oh and of course one SW/DM Dragonite we got in the last event that we have yet to power up.

We are wondering if we just show up with our mons and join in or we should power them up all prior to the raid. Obviously we won't know anyone there outside other parents and kids from the school and not really sure how many will be there. We have about 350,000 dusts and can level up the Houndooms and Pinsirs to level 30 along with the Dragnite. Also we could get our double grass Exeggcutor and a bug/flying Scyther but we only have 25 candies for each of them. Should we have to power them all up up to our stardust limit for the raid? As we haven't done any meaningful raid, we haven't really experienced the damage bonus either and feel a bit clueless.

As for the level 18 account, I guess it'll be fun to use 800CP Roselias and 1000CP Pinsirs on Mewtwo.

Honestly, unless you feel the need to power things up, you can probably just show up and go in with the Mons you currently have. Typically, EX raids will draw a decent sized group of people, so you should have more than enough to take Mewtwo down. Also, for the most part, people don't tend to exclude others at EX raids, so you shouldn't have any issues getting in on the action with the others who show up.

My best advice to you is this: show up early to the raid, and try to chat with others there (so they know the two of you are also there for the raid). Often times, people will start the raid as soon as it hatches unless they're waiting on others they know will be arriving late.

Good luck, and I hope both you and your kid catch Mewtwo! Be sure to take your time on the catch sequence and use the trick to freeze the circle in order to minimize the number of balls that get dodged or batted away.

Really the best option here is to either level the Dragonite up or try to complete a Tyranitar raid prior to your EX-Raid. Tyranitar is really something else, the best answer for Mewtwo and really good all-around. Even a level 20 Tyranitar straight from a raid outperforms most counters.

Outside of that, I would stick with the Dragonite, since they're pretty useful all around. The rest of those counters wouldn't survive long enough to do any real damage outside of Houndoom, and Houndoom is really only a decent counter for Mewtwo and nothing else. If you're going to use a Houndoom, you're better off evolving a weather-boosted, high level low IV one caught during Sunny or Foggy weather.

Show up 15-30min early. Chat with people. Join a larger group. Your Pokémon won’t put a dent on Mewtwo so others will have to carry you. Most importantly, go enjoy the game :)

On the other hand, Dragonite is the safest to power up. Will help in many things. Other Pokémon’s you power up will be waste of resources.

Level up you filthy casuals.

Seriously, just turn up and look for a group on their phones. Introduce yourself and you are good to go. If the group has less than 15 trainers, your pokemon may all die, do not leave the group. Press the green "rejoin battle" button and go back in with whatever auto-selection team you are given, to keep fighting.

When it comes to catching Mewtwo be sure to swipe to the right and use "Golden" raspberries for your best chance to catch the beastie.

With the new system of distributing EX-passes, probably a lot of casual players will get one for the first time.

One tip not previously mentioned here as far as I can see: Set up a second raid team in advance. It saves a few seconds on reloading, while still allowing you to bring in a team better than an autoselected one.

Powering all that up may get you 1 more ball at most.

Chatting with others, and splitting into optimal sized parties of the same team colour could get you up several more balls.

Thanks so much for all your comments! Guess we shouldn't get stressed over powering up our 'mons and just go early and be friendly. Didn't know levelling up the counters meant so little in getting more balls in a big raid and it's more important to get into the right group, since we have never raided in a group and haven't used the group code. Hopefully this thread could be found and help others in the same position as me if they are googling for it.

Wish we had a Tyranitar but we just got our first Larvitars literally just yesterday - is Ninantic trying to lure us into the game more? - one hatched and one caught wild coincidentally on the same day and it will take a long time to get it evolved. Also we do not personally know anyone who plays the game and thus can't really do any difficult raid.

I am still kind of tempted to spend 100,000 stardust on the Houndooms just to see if it helps in soloing the Jynx raid but should probably hold it off. Unfortunately we rarely see wild Houndoor and the 'dooms are leftovers from the last Halloween event.

Houndoom is a good Jynx counter but it's not useful in most other contexts. I wouldn't attempt a T3 solo, either, until you have some more general-purpose Pokemon (e.g. Tyranitar, Machamp, Hariyama, Dragonite, Mewtwo!) and can power them all up to at least 30.

Getting into a small group with others of the same team is critical for maximizing bonus balls. For perspective, I did my first EX raid yesterday with a group of 7 other people of mixed teams because there weren't that many of us. Despite having only B/C Tyranitars powered up to level 30+, I only got 1 damage ball and 1 team contribution ball (and my team didn't have control of the gym, so none from that). So, with a team of suboptimal counters, even in a modest-sized group, you won't be getting many personal damage balls - more important is that you try to sync up with other members of the same team and hopefully you'll have gym control too.

Even if you ended up with a catastrophic 6 total premier balls, though, Mewtwo can be caught. If you don't already use it, I would look up the ProdigiesNation catch-circle-lock trick as mentioned above for getting excellent curveballs consistently and practice on random wild Pokemon. Mewtwo has a fairly generous catch circle and is a medium distance away, so he's not that hard to throw at. If you have caught 200 Psychic types, your chance of catching Mewtwo with one premier ball (curve, Golden Razz) is ~1/4; if you land a great, that goes up to over 1/3. 6 is usually enough with those odds provided your throwing is good.

Thanks for the information, we'll definitely be studying on the tricks as suggested.

We do have four Hariyamas from the 3rd gen release, which are probably our best general attackers. I'm just glad we got them when Makuhitas were spawning frequently since they are now rare and we have yet to evolve a single Machamp or even a Poliwrath. I guess we'll just save our dust for the Dragonite hopefully a future Mewtwo for now. Thanks for the advice.

A word of caution. In the ex raid I did yesterday we had a 12 year old kid with his mother, the night before he read about curve balls and watched the YouTube guides of how to throw on mewtwo. We tried to convince him before the raid that if he is not experienced in curve balls then he should throw straight and practice after the raid. Unfortunately he didn't listen and missed most of his balls and mewtwo run. So if you can't consistently hit curve balls it is better to throw straight. Don't practice on mewtwo, it's not worth it.
