Imagine a level 3 gym from other team that has arcanine cp 2000 rhydon cp 2200 and a vaporean cp 2400. What would you use to fight? 3 polemons with half cp to battle each one, or 2 pokemons with bigger cp?

Since its an enemy Gym, why should i fight with half CP Pokémon?. I would pick my main attackers and take it down quicky.

Doesn't matter. Use your best attackers. It will lose 1000 prestige after each successful Pokémon defeat.

Only because it is level 3? If it was level 8 you use highest cp attackers?
So, you saying that only use half cp mons for prestiging?

Correct, you would only ever want to use 1/2 CP mons when prestiging.

There is (currently) no scaling of CP or prestige loss when it comes to attacking an enemy gym; whether you attack it with a 900 CP Beedril or a 3000 CP Dragonite the gym will lose a set 1000 prestige for each pokemon defeated (plus a bonus -1000 prestige for defeating the entire gym).

Like others have said. When attacking enemy gyms always use your strongest pokemon. You always knock off 1000 for each enemy pokemon you defeat and an extra 1000 for the last one (gym "boss").

When prestiging against your OWN team's gym that is when you use your 1/2 or "lesser" CP pokemon.

Ok thank you guys. So basically I have to have 3 teams, one for attacking, one for deffending and one for prestiging right? Of course some mons can attack and deffend but it is this right?

I'd use my 2800 vaporeon to take down the first two, piece of cake, and my 2400 jolteon to take out the vaporeon

and yes, I never put my offensive pokemon in gyms to defend. I have a whole other list of pokemon to defend.

You would never use smaller mons on rival gyms only training friendly gyms to get max prestige. Id use my 3k's on those a Gyrados b/hp to start and Dragonite DB/DC on the Vape.
