Avoiding Error 29 when Taking Down One Mon at a Time

OK - when I take down a gym, if I run through all five monsters at once three times, everything always works. Consistently.

However, sometimes at a highly contested gym, I'd rather take out the first mon by attacking it three times and running, before going on to the second (especially if it's a Blissey). I figure that means that there is one less player out there who might remote golden berry me, and if one of them decides to use berries, I'll already have taken several monsters out.

However, whenever I try that, I take out the first mon, and then get Error 29. I can't attack the second monster or re-attack the gym for several minutes. Is this an error, or a feature? Is there a way to avoid it?

You can avoid that by continuing the fight after the third attempt (which kicks the first Pokemon out) and battle vs atleast one other Pokemon in the same run before leaving again, works 100% for me

That hasn't always worked for me. Sometimes still got the error despite continuing fighting the next mon. It helps, though.

Tried it - it worked, and it's more efficient anyways. No point in leaving after offing a defender, then going back in to attack the next one. Even if it worked, that's just slower.

Just speculating here, but maybe it is intended as an anti-shaving measure.

I sometimes get "error 29" when I am taking a gym down with others, also some random times which might correlate with GPS drift, or marginal cell signal. (I always go through the whole gym, instead of picking off one mon at a time, though.)

It also happens when you are trying to battle a Pokémon that isn't there anymore because it got beaten by other trainers first.
