Do you have to WIN the raid at the sponsored gym to get a chance at an EX pass?

OK - to get an EX pass you have to raid at that gym.

Question: Do you have to win? If I try to solo a Groudon and fail miserably, am I still entered into the EX pass raffle?

You need to win. They reserve all the purple ribbons for levels 16 to 24 that piggyback during big groups.***The invite even says (paraphrase): You received an EX invite b/c you successfully completed a raid at ______

Definitely need to beat the raid boss to even qualify for an EX Raid Pass.
