Has anyone had problems with straight balls turning into curve balls?

Odd question, I know, but I'm trying to figure out what went wrong yesterday. My 12-year-old son, who's casual 27 (I'm 39) but started over a year ago and knows how to to throw (he caught our first legendary, Suicune, that I could not) loves Groudon and would really like to catch him. Yesterday we were able to do a raid but had technical difficulties. First my app crashed (got it back just in time), then his team fainted.... twice (I had to reassure him). It was a small group (7) and Groudon had SB, so it was close. But we made it, but just as "You win!" appeared his app crashed. At first, it didn't appear that he would get back into the catch screen - he was upset by now - but finally it appeared. He got 10 balls (rival gym), I got 12.

So I led him away from the others and tried to get him to take his time. I wanted to figure out what might work (I caught my only Groudon with GR/straight/great). But he threw ball after ball, turned away from me, and kept saying his straight throws unintentionally curved and it was a glitch. And some of his curve balls bounced off the mon although they landed in the catch circle.
I didn't see that and finally got him to pause... with one ball left (sadly, I couldn't catch him either).

I finally caught my Groudon with my 10th or 11th ball.... it was not easy, and not everyone of the 5 others (I only know their names from Discord, but they raid a lot) got him either. But my boy was heartbroken, so I promised him I would try to find out what went wrong (and try to get him another opportunity to get a Groudon). Too bad trading is not possible....

Have any if you experienced such a glitch? I suspect his aim was off because he was upset, but he insists it wasn't.

Thanks for any replies.

TL/DR: Has anyone had trouble with straight throws turning curved or had other throw glitches when trying to catch Groudon?

Groudon is a lot farther back than you think it is, so you have to throw the balls a lot farther out. If the circle is there but the ball appears to bounce off of it, then you're not throwing far enough. If he's trying to throw farther, then maybe the balls are crossing the center axis and are registering as curve balls. But anyway, a curve (accidental or not) should increase the chances of catch and should be a good thing.

So I think he simply wasn't throwing the balls far enough to actually hit the mon. I might or might not have been laughed at during a few Groudon raids because I put my whole body into the throw to ensure I get the ball back far enough. :)

In the past I have experienced a glitch where, if I threw a curve ball and then a straight ball the straight ball would have residual spin and spin off course, with stars and all.

Also and I haven't noticed this since I started pretty much only throwing curve balls (and is the reason I learned oh so long ago) but some Pokemon seem to have a shield in front of them that cause straight balls to be pushed off to the side and miss.

Something changed in the throwing mechanics for Groudon recently. I have to put my whole body into the throw, and give it minimal spin. Otherwise, the ball doesn't hit him.
