Gyarados: worth it?

So just how worth it is Gyarados right now? It's the best Groudon counter, yes, but it's also going to be outclassed on offense as soon as Kyogre hits in a month or so, and I REALLY don't care about optimized defense as the system is to pathetic to care about. I'm pretty low on both Stardust and Groudon counters, but I DO want to grab a decent Groudon before this event ends, so just how much of an advantage would it be when my best stuff right now consists of a Dragonite, some decent Eggeys, and a few Vaporeons? Worth the investment?

gary is gary. the classic gamer OG hall of famer. you gota have at least 1 maxed out gary esp now since hes the undisputed water goat champion of the world.

I like diverse attackers so even tho gyarados will be outclassed semi soon, he is still a great attacker and doesn't cost rare candies. I think having one good gyarados is def worth it.

Pokemon being outclassed doesn't bother me. Also, I only power up 1 of each legendary. So, Gyarados will still have a use, at least for me.

I recommend to power up at least one Gyarados, he is best at the moment and will still be a good option after Kyogre´s release
+ he is cheaper, since you wont need 250ish rare candies
+ he could mega evolve, if they add it one day

Evolving some 170+ Magikarps would help, too (assuming you have the candies)

I have 3 strong Gyarados´ and they proved their value even against Solar Beam, no regrets - especially since I wont ever have enough rare candy to power up more than one Kyogre

The mega evolution comment in particular is a fantastic point. Thanks very much for your insight.

Except that Kyogre will have its primal form by the time Gyarados gets its mega, which outclasses Gyarados even more.

Okay, went ahead and raised my Gyarados up and he's now my 6th highest CP. Just 4k stardust short of his last non-weather breakpoint.

Thanks a ton for the thoughts all. Now I just have to figure out if I want to TM my 100% Dragon Tail =P

The key with any non-legendary now, IMO, is to optimize a wild catch. Get out there and catch Magikarps. Especially when it's rainy (wind doesn't help for karp). When you have 400 candy saved up, evolve your best one (highest level, best IVs, etc.) Then you'll have a solid Gary for no dust investment. Hope for Waterfall/Hydro Pump, but be prepared to TM if needed.

And Kyogre won't have Gary's double resistance to Ground or single resistance to bug and fight. Kyogre also won't have Gary's double weakness to lightning (just will have single), and no weakness to rock. This is a big deal since rock is weak to water, and rock/ground is double weak to water.

In short, like Moltres and Entei, or like Raikou and Zapdos, they are different. It's good to have both in your toolbox.

Excellent response ?

I would like to add that if you were in a hurry and didn’t mind spending the dust (and assuming you don’t already have one), catching a weather boosted magicarp from a raid could be beneficial... with a little luck... ok and assuming legendary raids (which appear to be a permanent addition to the game) don’t take precedent.

NVM almost too many stipulations ???
