Some people have Mewtwos, some people have $1000 phones. Whatever, after a day in the office, many people don't have 45 min to an hour repeatedly trying to beat a tier 3 they don't need nor want. Gives them more time to actually play/walk/eat/shop for groceries and click a go plus.***Adding: I'm sure there is some overlap from those upset Mewtwo got nerfed and also upset somebody actually used said-softie in a mid-level raid
Thoughts on Solo T3 with powerful Legendary
Recently a player shared his experiences of Soloing a Confusion/Focus Blast Alakazam (https://pokemongo.gamepress.gg/q-a/soloed-alakazam-confusionfocus-blast-aid-my-max-out-mewtwo). Unexpectedly (at least to me), a fellow GamePresser commented that "...the use of legendaries in solo raids a bit like cheating" which led to a heated discussion. I decided to share some of my views here.
TL; DR: There is nothing wrong with using Mewtwo in Solo attempt. In fact, there are different classes and subclasses of Solo achievement, and it has come to point where they needed to be clarified.
Major Type A: Do it with a minimum team.
1. First Class: All level 30 or below, no duplicate
2. Second Class: All level 30 or below
3. Pass: (no restriction)
Major Type B: Do it as fast as possible.
In this major type, you can use whatever you want. 6 maxed Mewtwo or whatsoever. But then the challenge is to finish it as early as possible. In the vid, the trainer had 10 seconds left. You can try for 15 or even 20 seconds left to break his record.
I don't see using legendary is a problem or should ever be considered "cheating". It is just less challenging and, correspondingly, the achievement is "downgraded" by one or two sub-classes. Also, he can always aim for Major Type B, i.e., fast and furious.
Thanks for reading and you are welcome to share your view.

More or less how I feel.
I couldn't get pass the 1st paragraph.
"Hey guys, we think we're so good, we've arbitrarily assigned ourselves status level divisions to show just how important these achievements are to us. We've even drawn up some "Drama" to make it sound like there's ground for reason to believe this. Please notice us and comment how good we are in pokemon go."
Except, in the case of confusion/focus Zam, there is no other way without Mewtwo. There is no way to classify it as a level 30 matter or even the luxury to use 6 non duplicate pokemon.
It really depends on how you want to classify this achievement, either 1. Strictly to your scale or 2. Relative to what the other options are.
- Kind of reminds me of music competitions like the Chopin piano competition. In some cases a first prize is never awarded because the 'best player' does not reach the standard of the first prize and instead of given the second prize even though he was the best for that year.
- Is more what I think it should be. Remember than dude who soloed Flareon with L39 golems? Are we going to undermine his achievement because it broke the level 30 rule AND the duplicate rule? He remains the only one to do it and I hold him in high regard. I soloed Zam (psycho) with 3 shadow claw Gengars, am I going to be roasted because it is a legacy moveset and also because I used 3 of them?
Those are not "rules" by any means, those are just challenging restrictions for which you can try. Like you said, for some bosses with certain moves it is impossible to obtain First Class or even Second, but nevertheless it's just a proposal.
No one should accuse or be accused of using Mewtwo/legacy Gengar. I consider legacy Gengar as a reward for playing the game a long time ago and eventually everyone will get Mewtwo.
Confusion/Focus Blast Zam can absolutely be solo'd without the use of Mewtwo. At least one level 39 is needed, but level mid-30 as well as 30 attackers can also be used:

I posted yesterday about using 4 level 39 Ttar and 1 level 39 Gengar (I was trying to go for the record in terms of fastest soloing C/FB Zam. I don't have a Mewtwo, and I'm pretty sure trainers with Shadow Ball Mewtwo will do it faster than me): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymBn3snDYeY&list=LL9eaw0dBrdJEMgIWQZTkyQQ&index=3
Is there a special category for soloing a t3 with an older, slower phone, such as my Galaxy S5?
Conditions are never going to be equal for everyone. I don't consider using legendaries, or maxed out attackers, or a faster phone cheating. A level 40 player has more experience and (probably) better counters than lower level players. However, this does not diminish the accomplishment in my view, especially against the more difficult t3 bosses.
You are really only competing against yourself; it's a personal goal/achievement. Either way, you have my respect.
