Does Hydropump Gyarados has any utility?

Personally I never use my DT/ HP Gyarados to attack, if I want to defeat Rhydons or any rock or Fire type in Gyms I use my 2 Vaporeon, the main reason is worldwide known, Gyarados doesn't have water type as a fast move, that means that with Gyarados takes longer to defeat water weak mons (even with its superior attack stat). Time ago I changed its move Bite to DT because I have never used it to attack so I thought with that move at least it would work as a possible defender whenever I lack Blissey and Snorlax, but still I don't find a good use to it, I have seriously considered use a Charge TM in order to get either Crunch, which will be nice and better that HP against Mewtwo (Plus is a better defensive move, I don't have to worry about Fast TM since I got plenty of them) or Outrage who will be good against Steel Wing Raid Boss Dragonite (if ever comes) plus is better on defense, and have a niche against D'Nite in Gyms, so what do you think about it? ?

Gyarados is probably the worst gym defender in the game. DT/HP all the way.

You mean as a generalist attacker right
(For an unknown reason it appears on the B tier defender tier list)

I've run a lot of Pokebattler sims for raid bosses, and there are certain scenarios where Gyarados outperforms Vaporeon, with both at the same level and both with Hydro Pump. For example against Tyranitar with Bite/Fireblast, Gyarados Dragon Tail/HP is a top-class attacker overall.

Mm any other example? XD I think it's so rare to find a B/ FB Tyra in Gyms, you may encounter it as a raid boss, but the risk it is carrying Stone Edge is alarming

Another example is against Mewtwo: Gyarados HP outperforms Vaporeon HP and is not an unreasonable choice overall.

As GamePress notes on the Gyarados page, Gyarados has the highest-DPS Hydropump of all due to its great base Attack stat on top of STAB.

Regarding the possibility of Ttar Stone Edge: I generally check the attack set of raid bosses before I pick my team.

I.... thought Crunch was better against Mehtwo, Vape doesn't seem a reasonable option against him, but, you're right about checking the boss moveset before fight him, is a good idea doing it alone before the big group comes securely, so you can be more prepared and don't loss the damage bonus ;)

Crunch is definitely better, but as long as the question is about the value of Gyar HP vs. Vaporeon HP, this is another example (and Gyar HP vs Mewtwo is not bad at all, could certainly be a B team member). Also unless one has plenty of charge TMs lying around, people more likely have high-level HP Gyaradoses at hand than Crunch Gyars.

I think the last time I used my Gyarados for attacking was against Lugia. Gyarados is resistant to ground moves, but also weak to rock, so that also adds in a type advantage gamble against Rhydon... not that I've ever actually done a Rhydon raid.

Here, two practical tests between different Gyarados and Vaporeons, really helpful.

I had a similar question a while back (I have a powered-up Bite/HP Gyarados that I used in gyms for the high CP before the gym revamp). Someone pointed out that HP Gyarados may be a good counter for Solar Beam Ho-Oh whenever it comes out, since so many of the strongest attackers against Ho-Oh will get demolished by Solar Beam. Gave me something to think about at least.

I got a Dragon breath / hydro pump gyra what is about this?

Dude, DB is amazing. Save it. Much more useful than current fast move, much useful in defeating gyms.

Kind of an awkward position. Dragon Breath is good against Dragonite, but Hydro Pump is resisted. If you have charge TMs to spare, it might be worthwhile to try for Outrage so it can be used as an anti-Dragonite attacker.

I give up about any Gyarados, it's just i do not even put a star on it anymore, it just too disappointed to have it a general attacker..... to take over gym, I never use Gyar cuz it always have better choice than Gyar, and it's fast move, I only want legacy DB. Damn, it can't be happened anymore.

Gyarados with Bite/Crunch would come in handy against Mewtwo with Focus Blast. Hydropump is fine too.

Depending on a gym, I find it to be a pretty efficient gym sweeper. Last night I ran into one with two low CP followed by a high CP Rhydon.

Charged the HP on the low CP, one-shot the Rhydon.

Is it optimal? Probably not, but it was quite fun, and that's what the game is about.

You're gonna wish you had a team of Gyarados with DT/B/HP/C when you're faced with a Focus Blast Mewtwo boss.
