PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Water Gun should be paired with Hydro Pump as Relicanth’s primary Water-type set.

  • Aqua Tail is a more maneuverable albeit weaker alternative.

  • Zen Headbutt provides no meaningful coverage and lacks STAB.

  • Ancient Power is underwhelming in every aspect.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Zen Headbutt is superior to Water Gun due to the massive power difference.

  • Hydro Pump is preferred for its raw power and very early dodge window.

  • Aqua Tail is a viable alternative that hits more frequently.

  • Ancient Power has good coverage, but is too slow to be considered a threat.

PVE Overview

Though its typing instilled the hype of an Omastar-like presence, Relicanth is sorely missing a meaningful Rock-type identity. Its stats are like Lapras; a bulky oddball with passable damage, yet the lack of a useful second type is lamentable. This means the only avenue Relicanth can pursue is the Water-type route, which it’s sadly 2 generations too late to.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Water Gun + Aqua Tail and Ancient Power or Hydro Pump

Water Gun is generally a good move and also benefits from STAB.

Aqual Tail is preferred for its low 35 energy cost which lets it be spammed frequently, is good for baiting shields, and also takes advantage of STAB. Ancient Power also receives STAB, but the nerf from the April 2020 rebalance has decreased its damage output significantly.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 2 / 5

Relicanth is an interesting Pokemon in Great League, featuring great bulk, and a good moveset. A Water/Rock typing however, does give it some major issues against common picks, including a double weakness to Grass-types. Unfortunately for Relicanth, Great League is comprised of a large variety of Water-types that compete with each other for roster slots, which makes it difficult for Relicanth to stand out. Overall still a decent pick that can catch unprepared opponents by surprise, with its regional exclusivity being the primary concern surrounding its use.

Ultra League: 1 / 5

With a max CP of 2528 Relicanth can be somewhat expensive to use in Ultra League, as it would need to be powered up a lot to reach its full potential. The numerous Dragon and Fighting-types in this league do pose significant problems for Relicanth though, which makes it difficult to use in the current Giratina meta.

Master League: 0 / 5

Relicanth doesn't have adequate stats to do well in Master League.
