PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Double Kick is the best Fast Move available for offense.

  • Rock Smash usually edges out Low Kick, but Low Kick is much easier to dodge with.

  • Close Combat is the charged move of choice.

  • Brick Break is the silver-medal move.

  • Low Sweep is strictly worse than Brick Break.

  • Stomp, Blaze Kick and Stone Edge are impractical for Hitmonlee’s role as a Fighting-type attacker.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Rock Smash is superior to Low Kick and Double Kick due to its higher base power.

  • Blaze Kick is the best defensive Charged Move option due to its high power, great coverage, and dodging difficulty.

  • Brick Break* is the runner-up.

  • Stomp* is another fairly strong option, hitting counters for neutral damage and having a low enough energy cost for Hitmonlee’s frailty.

  • Stone Edge and Close Combat look okay on paper, but Hitmonlee doesn't have the staying power to use them.

PVE Overview

Hitmonlee had the makings of greatness, but his lackluster moves prevent him from being a good Fighting-type attacker. He’s also frail to boot, although many other high-powered attackers make a name for themselves being glass cannons. Hitmonlee’s 224 Atk stat is not backed up by good Fighting-type moves.

To make things worse, Tyrogue and Hitmonlee are ridiculously rare, while superior alternatives such as Machamp and Hariyama are rather common.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Double Kick + Brick Break* and Stone Edge or Close Combat

Double Kick is the best Fast Move for Hitmonlee, sporting excellent energy generation, while giving up damage output. Rock Smash sports average damage output, but its energy gains are pitiful, and Hitmonlee needs energy to pressure shields. Low Kick is one of the worst Fast Moves in the game.

Brick Break is a move limited to Elite TMs, which is very unfortunate, because this is the cheapest Charge Move option available for baiting shields and dealing chip damage. Stone Edge provides coverage, which is particularly useful against Flying-type Pokemon. Close Combat is also an option due to its massive damage threat, but its harsh self-debuff can be difficult to work with.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 1.5 / 5

Hitmonlee doesn't have the stat-build or moveset needed to succeed in the Great League, especially with a number of powerful Psychic types running around. It's capable of functioning if you're desperate for a fighting type or you're playing some form of limited format, but generally speaking it's just overshadowed as a Fighting type.

Ultra League: 0 / 5

The same story as Great League, but outclassed to an even greater degree.

Master League: 0 / 5

The same story as Ultra League, but outclassed even farther than that.
