Finally soloed Gengar
First, thank you because I asked here a couple of times referring this topic. Second, it is not a question, just sharing my experience :D
Today I had the opportunity to fight a Gengar boss, and I win it! With only one second left.
In the first try, I see it had Sucker Punch / Focus Blast. A bad combination for my psychic glass cannons (destroyed with this quick move) and for my dark mons (wiped out by the fighting charge move). As it seem it isn’t t the best scenario, I revive my mons and wait a lot in the lobby hoping someone joined the fight. The gym is in an office building and has a lot of activity, so it seems likely that more players will join. However, it seems no one is interested in a Gengar raid.
I really want to solo the mon, so I re-check my team and try again. Now I have in mind to dodge any Focus Blast, as it automatically destroys any of my mons. I try a couple of times, fleeing in the middle of the fight and taking some notes:
- Focus Blast is really easy to dodge
- My lvl 27 Alakazam C/Psy is a mess. It dies too fast
- My Espeon is close to throw its 3rd FS before it faints. I put some dust on it to bring it from 2556 to 2619.
- My Fireblast T-rex is really disappointing. I’ll leave it as 6th mon, as its bite may be the difference if all the others faint with only a couple of seconds left.
- My Houndooms with S/FP are dealing great damage, maybe over my B/SE T-rex. Foul Play is the ultimate charge move to kill ghosts or psychic mons, and Houndooms should be better ranked (only 7.5).
- My lvl 32 Dragonite has the highest survivability, but it does less damage than my Houndooms, T-rex and Espeon.
So, the lineup ends as follows:
- 2619 Espeon ZH/FS
- 2067 Houndoom S/FP 2067
- 2067 Houndoom S/FP 1999
- 3244 Tyranitar B/SE
- 3131 Dragonite DT/O
- 3257 Tyranitar B/FB
The fight starts with 175 left, as always. The Espeon performs great, delivering its 3rd FS just before a Focus Blast kills it (i don't bother to dogde this one). The Houndooms, dodging perfectly the charge move, destroy the boss, and I see that its hp bar is in yellow before the countdown is in its half. Time for T-rex. Another session of perfect dodging and SE after every focus Blast, and the boss is in red. 30-25 second left and it is time for the Dragon. I know that if it faints I won’t be able to win, but I don’t dodge, just spam DT/O as it goes… and Gengar bends the knee with 1 second left!!

It won't last long, but the raid boss can only attack once every 2-3 seconds (I forget...) so you should still be able to get a lot of attacks in prior...If you can get off 4 Shadow Balls, you're hurting the boss Gengar immensely...
I assume timeouts are still the main issue so higher DPS is probably more important...Just have to try another to see if it's easier/worthwhile...
