how to catch ditto?

to all you lucky guys who found Ditto- were there any giveaway signs in the Pidgey/Rattata before you caught it? e.g. very high CP or did they run away a few times?
I haven't got many balls so don't want to waste them on these mons!

just try catch them and hope for the best. there's actually no signs that they're gonna be dittos

For me, I was catching a 96 cp pidgey and it kept jumping out of the pokeballs which is kind of weird so I threw a great ball and caught it. No other giveaways that I detected for my first ditto encounter.

For me, Magikarp kept jumping out of balls for 5 times. I felt weird so I changed ball and caught it.

Was your Ditto also 96 CP? I struggled to catch my 470 CP (low IV) Pidgey/Ditto, but did not notice the Pidgey CP. I was calling him lots of names, so maybe that helped him transform!

Well I heard that most of the time Ditto is next to the mon he mimic. Could be coincidence

This is an interesting comment. For those that caught Ditto were there 2 pokemon in a cluster type spawn? Or were any of these solo pokemon all by themselves?

Mine was sitting right next to what it was mirroring. I thought it was coincidence.

Last night I saw on Reddit that Ditto is in the game, played 3 hours in the night for catching pidgeys but not a Ditto. It was really frustrating me and today I decided to catch all Pidgeys, Zubats, Rattata's and Magikarps. After 10 or something a 30 cp Magikarp which gave me a Ditto. And 5 minutes later caught my second Ditto, it was a Pidgey and don't know the cp.

Imo it's just random and you have to be a bit lucky.
Good luck!

Honestly, I was shocked when the Pidgey I caught - after several tries turned into a Ditto. Only happened once (it sounds like there are folks who have had several Pokemon turn into Dittos), the Pidgey was low level CP and so is my Ditto, but I'm happy! Sounds like there's no rhyme or reason behind it so just do what you do and have fun!

My Ditto-Rattata was sitting at a spot where often rare pokemon like Dratini spawn, directly beside a gym. But that's a sample size of 1 ..

I got my Ditto out of a Pidgey from a lured stop.

Literally just got mine a couple minutes ago off a 100+CP rattata... no place special, just same path I walk to and from work. Made it a point to catch all pidgeys, zubats, rats, and magikarps I saw today. So just keep catching...

I thought I was picking up a low cp pidgey to farm its dust. After the ball settled, the interface told me a ditto had been caught and added it to my pokedex. I had no clue that anything was different about the pidgey. This happened once out of maybe fifteen pidgies today. Sorry, but if there is something to look for, I have no clue.

I caught two yesterday (out of a lot of ratatattas and pidgeys).

The first was from a ratatta that supposedly was 179cp but wouldn't stay put despite three 'great' greatballs (unusual enough to keep going) - turned out to be a lv26 ditto. The second just appeared when I'd caught a Pidgey normally. My guess is the capture/ball success stats are based on the ditto's level rather than the 'host' so a Pidgey/Rattatta that is harder to hold down than normal may hold a high level ditto, but if the ditto is low level you may not notice.

I had the same experience. First ditto low level just came out of a normal pidgey catch. Second one was high level and was "disguised" as a very very escapy Rattata. But this is all very anecdotal, could just be a completey random thing.

finally got Ditto!! He was a pidgey, standing alone, with a green ring, caught with 1 normal ball. No giveaway the he was actually a Ditto. Not in an unusual place.
