B/SE Tyranitar and DT/O Dragonite

So I just TMed a Tyranitar to B/SE and a Dragonite to DT/O.

I tried out both in a gym. B/SE Tyranitar still had 80% HP left after battling a higher CP Snorlax (it had Lick).
Then next up was a Charizard. I had a leftover Stone Edge from the previous battle with Snorlax. Stone Edge just took so much HP from Charizard, I just needed a few more Bites.
I still have a Larvitar to evolve, I hope I will get B/C, or at least IT/C which I can TM.

Then, DT/O Dragonite. DT is so slow, I wonder if it is even worth the extra DPS from STAB, when the only type it is SE to is its own type, which of course is also SE to it. I even took a Hyper Beam to the face because of how stupidly slow DT was.
Is DT/O really worth fast TMing from SW/O?

  • Don't evolve the Larvitar (yet), Tyranitar Raids are a thing now.
  • As the game goes now DPS are important. Depends how many Dragonite you already have on your army (and secondly on how many TMs you have).
I'm holding on fast TMing a 3331cp SW/DC Dragonite, but I have 3 more Dragon attackers and one 100% level 20 that soon or after will go up to 30+.

That Larvitar is 93% IV egg hatch. I have no idea how many raids it will take before I can even encounter a Tyranitar of IV 93 or above, let alone catch one.
And it still costs the same candies and dust to power up, egg hatches and raid catches are both level 20.

-Catching a raid boss is +10 candies
-Evolving a Larvitar is -123 candies
I took on 13 Tyranitar Raids, 2 of them were very high CP: 2083 (93%, missed it), 2092 (98% caught yesterday). I'd rather power up even a 80% Tyranitar, than evolve a Larvitar, ROLL moveset(!), and in case it's good power up.

Is it that easy to catch a raid Tyra? Just 10 mins ago, I had 9 premier balls to catch it. Used 9 golden berries with 9 Great Throw and all 9 balls failed. Maybe it is due to my unlucky fate to catch Tyra time n time again..

DT/O is similar to beam and hyper beam in that the animations are long and the damage comes at the end, making these movesets risky to use against raid bosses.

I like Hurricane for the reason you mentioned; outrage does have high dps though which save some time in gym battles. What I'm trying to say is that outrage has a high damage output but is risky to use in raids

My experience till now is that the battle still lags and I find it hard to dodge most of the charged moves by the raid boss. Even if I use Hurricane, I still got hit the charged move even though I kept moving around. Maybe is my phone or maybe it is still Niantic's servers lag problems.

True-at least the damage is more likely to register because it comes at the beginning of the animation

All the generalists were nerfed with the new gym rework with SE being 1.4x and 1.96x when double SE...

That said, DT/O or DB/O or good move Dragonites are still decent generalist attackers IF you don't have 6 Machamps or kept other good moveset fighting (fill in with grass, water, whatever) types, etc...Hitmonlees, Primeapes, etc...

For single SE damage, DT/O usually gets closer to being more usable on the team, but they are never OPTIMAL or SUPERIOR now...

I do think they are great for clearing out rival gyms since you don't want to waste time swapping stuff out and Outrage, being 2 bar means you can charge up after 1 battle, destroy the next mon completely the next battle, etc...just to clear it faster...

I used 2 TMs on my only 97% SW/HB Dragonite...Usually use him as my 6th man on a raid squad...

TL:DR - I would use a TM on a SW/O Dnite...(and did)...If high IV, even better...Most people have these powered up anyways from the old gym meta so not as dust costly to keep powered up...

DT/O IMO is a defensive move. And defenders today are not worth spending any resources on. I have not used a DT/O on offense in gyms or raids for a very long time. 171 raids in total here. There are better options for attacking especially with the SE buff. DT/H is more usufel now because of Machamp bosses. And for attacking gyms I use DB/DC.

Always said that DT/O is overrated since the introduction of new moves. Looks good on paper. But not in real life battle.

since you just got the movesets I understand why you feel this way. B&SE takes absolutely no effort, you immediately know it's a beast. DT&O is a little different, you gotta learn how to dodge more with it, and DT isn't the easiest move to dodge w when you first get it. You just gotta keep fighting with him and soon you will like him a lot.
