Blissey etiquette story

A few days ago there was a discussion about blissey etiquette, or how to help one's team by not placing a pokemon behind (above) a wall of blissey which would make it difficult for teammates to prestige. Well, I saw this in action today, but not how I expected it.

Behind my workplace is a walking/biking trail, 1 km long, that leads to either a pokestop or a gym. That's enough motivation for me to take a daily walk when I'm at work, usually the longer distance to the stop. The gym is hotly contested, either Mystic or Valor, and my lunch break is short, so I don't normally fight it. But today it was so hot and the gym is closer, so I thought, why not? Level 10, Valor, with a gastly followed by 4 blissey (one about 2080 cp, then three 2700+) followed by easier defenders. I was aiming to bring it down to level 8, in the time I had more wasn't possible.

So I sat on the bench and tapped away. My 3249 cp DT/H dragonite did quite well against the first blissey. But then I had to run, 'cause I timed out against the second one, so it took some time to bring it down from 50,000.

After a while, I noticed a city police car driving by, on the walking trail no less! Odd, I thought, but of course they can do what they want ;)

At 39,000 I had to stop and return to work. I thought it was quite funny that Valor would now have to prestige against 2700+ blissey and headed back, catching a few 'mon on the way.

To my surprise, a short distance away was the police car, turned around next to the trail! I wondered, what if? Sure enough, 15 minutes later the gym was back to level 9, about 42,500 prestige. And the new defender? Sitting high above the wall of blissey, a 3000+ rhydon.

So much for leaving an easy prestige target for your team, LOL. I don't expect this gym to go back to level 10! Probably cost him a few potions as well ;)

Coincidence? I think not. Instead of fighting crime, he was fighting blissey :D

Just kidding, he was no doubt on his lunch break as well.

You do know 39,000 prestige is merely 1 battle with the Blissey, right? Worst case it's 2 battles...but still pretty quick...

Sounds like the gym was Gastlystratted so what you can do is just knock off the Blissey 1 by 1 to 39k, 29k, etc...and hope other cops come by and put more Rhydons (or any other easier defender) in...ABOVE the Blissey so it'll be easier to take down later.

I know, and would have taken it down further if I'd had the time (but my lunch break is only 30 minutes, although I was a bit late today ;)

Like I said last week execute those MF'ers!

No offense intended, but I really don't understand how a reasonably high level trainer ever times out against a Blissey when fighting an enemy gym with full-strength attackers. I time out sometimes when prestiging with an attacker at 60-70% of the CP of the Blissey, but against an enemy gym, there are so many attackers that can easily get the job done in time. Maybe I'll need a second attacker to come in and mop up if, say, my Alakazam or Espeon doesn't have enough stamina to finish off the Blissey singlehandedly, but I honestly don't think I've ever timed out against a Blissey in an enemy gym. I only dodge charge moves, so I guess I could see someone timing out if they were dodging everything, but why would anyone dodge quick moves against Blissey?

I've timed out against Blisseys lots of times when the game becomes unresponsive for 20 or 30 seconds, then usually rolls back a bunch of damage I did and takes off half the health of my attacker once it resumes. That or the dodge glitch wasting time and making my stronger fighters unusable too quickly, especially if the Blissey has hyper beam.

The second blissey had hyperbeam, indeed, which I couldn't dodge (game lag or trainer lag ;) It probably made it a bit challenging to prestige against, though - mission accomplished.

No offense taken, and good point. I was just severely limited by time and couldn't pick optimal attackers. (And yes, still have a lot to learn even at lvl 35.) But I'm ready to test my attackers against high cp blissey! (Damn, why do they have to shut down the gyms so soon?)

Alakazam is a beast, although it dies after the first charge move, excluding Psychic, it normally takes out 20–33% of the Blissey's HP before fainting.

It happens quite a lot when you have bad reception or an old phone. I've learned how to spot quickly if I'm going to have difficulty due to one of those two things and run from the battle before taking too much damage. I'd rather waste a potion than have to waste a revive and a potion. As an example, just this morning I fought a lower level 2600-ish Blissey, and got dangerously close to timing out due to lag while using a 2700-ish Flareon followed by a 2600-ish Exeggutor without even dodging the specials. I didn't back out this time, but I finished with only about 10 seconds on the clock which I've learned could really mean 0 seconds when experiencing heavy lag. It's awful.

Does this Blissey-etiquette really make sense? If i see a rival gym, i try to kick out everybody lower than blissey anyway - so an altruistic player, who puts a trainable pokemon under blissey will be kicked out first - either shaved by own "mates" or by rivals, who want to make the gym unprestigable.

This is a dilemma. I am hoping for the gym-rework.

Well, I always thought a police officer (like the one who apparently put a high level mon in the gym I attacked) would altruistically put cannon fodder in his team's gym ;)

Haha, just kidding, they're obviously having just as much fun playing this game as the rest of us, which was good to know.

I don't buy the whole "Blissey etiquette" thing. The only Blisseys that are annoying are the 1800-2000cp type. Anything over 2500 is perfect for my Machamps or Exeggutor to get 500 prestige, and using an entire team that high allows me to get through the whole gym, which gives quite a bit of prestige.

In fact, Blisseys are an incentive for me to get in there and stick a good pokemon on top of them. There is one gym I have been in since April 3rd. It had 2 2800 Blissey in it (I don't remember the lvl at the time I went in it) and I stuck my best defender above them, my 2948 cp AT Vaporeon. My Vaporeon sat at the top of that gym for some time, but now sits in the number 6 spot, above the Blisseys, but with 2 3000 cp Snorlax above it, and 2 3200 Dragonites on top of that.

The only pokemon I have had in a gym longer is my 2900 zh/p Blissey, since March 4th. I stuck her in the number 9 spot in a gym as soon as I powered her up, and haven't seen her since. Since then she has fallen all the way to the 3 spot, so clearly people don't have an issue prestiging against her...or at least effectively shaving...

Either way, Blissey is the common factor in my 2 longest held gyms. I guess it may be hard for a lower level, or more inexperienced player, to prestige against, but it does lead to the strongest gyms when they do get to 10. Sticking a Blissey in anywhere is always a good thing IMO. You are only hurting the gym sticking in a crappy defender just for the sake of prestige.

Definitely the lag, spinning ball, return all their health/damage taken, etc...has caused me to time out...

I just took out some Blisseys, but the fight was so annoying with that lag/spinning ball for 20-30 seconds of the fight, I had to run and try again later...

You still seem to lose health though so it's a sure time out if you get enough of that...

I agree Blissey is the only real deterrent now since a lot of people will simply not bother when it's a Blissey stacked gym...

Well, I didn't before, but since blissey is the only challenging defender - and I clearly need more practice defeating her without timing out - I'll be looking for blissey-stacked red and yellow gyms now to take down to the highest cp blissey, cause surely they will appreciate the opportunity to test their prestiging skills ;)
