Which Dratini to evolve?

My 10k hatched a dratini and I can evolve my 3rd Dragonite if I transfer all my other dratini. But which one should I evolve?

Lvl 29 - CP 673 - 78% (13A/14D/8ST) Lvl 28 - 654 - 80% - 13/12/11 Lvl 20 - 479 - 89% - 15/13/12 Lvl 20 - 476 - 87% - 14/11/14

Which one would you choose, and why?

I don't want to wait any longer for my 3rd dragon so it'll be one of them.

Thanks for any advice!

Do you need/would you power a defender? What is your areas general safe CP level?

I would run 3 and 4 through the CP calculator and see which gives the higher CP as an evolved DNite...and do that one.

That'll be 3... So although they're lowest CP (both hatched, therefore lvl 20) you think IV's are more important than post-evolution CP?

In the end, RNG may laugh at me anyway and give him a dreaded moveset ;)

Post evolution CP is what I was getting at...I mentioned checking the CP after evolution.
I didn't check these myself - but occassionally you can have a mon that has higher CP than another candidate pre evolution, but after evolution they switch due to the IV distribution.

I would check the CP of it after evolving. The calculator here can do it for you.

If it was only ever going to be an attacker then I would go the highest level...but this is a Dragonite. For these rarer mons (Tyranitar, D Nite, Blissey) I am more selective with my IV.

Good point, eventually I'll have enough candies to max him out.

I'd choose #3, as all my dragonites are attack, and the 15 attack stat wins it for me.

I normally keep at least one of them (have only two so far) out of gyms for that reason. Good point.

DeLana,
if you must have a high cp gym ready Dragonite now, then evolve the lvl 29 one.
The difference between #1 and #3 is some CP but at least #1 can be dropped in gym as soon as you evolve it.
#3 is going to take some time to get enough power up to be the cp that #1 is.

I have enough high CP defenders, but my other Dragonites' IV's are only 38 and 76% (although they're great attackers and > 3000 CP).

Thanks, everyone, your replies have cleared it up for me: I'll go with the highest IV one, #3.

I'll let you know the moveset once I get the courage to evolve ;)

At level 39 the CP difference between 1 and 3, fully evolved, is around 50 CP (3434 v 3487). How much candy and stardust is that worth to you?

At level 30 the CP differential between 1 and 3 is 2986 v 3032. Have you got, and is D3, worth the additional 58 candy and 65k dust? You seem a bit low on Dratini candy so if you evolve 3 or 4 you will simply be stuck with a 2k Dragonite for a while.

For me, unfortunately none of your 4 specimens is so outstanding to justify powering up from level 20.... none of them can break 3.5k at level 39. In your circumstances I would go for 1 or 2 and save the candy for the next evolution. BUT IF you found or hatched a 95/97 then yeah go for the full power up from level 20.

Lv28 and above, also with 95 IVs and up? Pretty rare to come by no? So even with a good egg hatch u wouldn't evolve due to low cp?

Yup, this is why I have more than 20 Dragonites, as opposed to say, 12-15.

I'm sitting on a 100% level 20 Dratini (caught wild last year), and several other great hatches @93, 95 IVs. I have not evolved them. I only evolve the ones level 28 and above so that I save all my Dratini candies for more evolves.

In fact the OP's situation is very typical of what I face. By the time I accumulate, say, 140-150 candies and am ready for a Dragonite evolution, I'd get 1 or 2 candidates which is/are (usually) high 70s/low 80s at level 28-30, and also a number of other good IV level 20 hatches. But I always, always, always, evolve the level 30 one so that the candies and dust I save not powering them up roll over into the next evo.

The math works out like this: For example if you evolve 2 level 20s, say, with 95% IVs and power them up to level 30, you'd be spending Dratini candy that is equivalent to 3 evolutions. Your 2 95%s may sit slightly higher mine if we are in the same gyms, but I have an additional Dragonite attacker (whereas you do not).

And really, 40CP, 50CP difference is nothing. As an attacker, damage flooring makes the marginal IV difference inconsequential until you hit the next breakpoint.

As a Defender, Dragonite is already the 2nd highest CP mon in the game. If I cannot get 5th spot and above for my 70-80% IV Dragonite in a particular gym, I'll try to find a gym that can. Provided you have a car, gyms are simply a drive away.

Well, I just did it, and she (#3) got dragon tail/hurricane! Very happy. Current CP is 2072 (level 20.5), but I'll use her as an attacker first. She might be an awesome prestiger against blissey!

Thanks to everyone for your opinions!

Congrats man. Hurricane is fast enough to cast between well timed DTs. I like it.

Edit to add Hurricane also comes fast on defense. It's not hard to get snuck up on by it.

Nice, I just got this as my 3rd D'Nite too (both others with SW..). Tried it out against some Vapes, didn't get as far as I'd hoped, so used up the last of my 30-odd candy to bring it to almost 2700 CP / level 26.5 and it performs remarkably better as a strong attacker. Dodges well with that MS even with my average skills... Enjoy!
