Experience with Magneton?

How does Magneton fare against the new Gyarados? In old times, Magneton was clearly inferior to Jolteon in the one important task for Electrics, beating up Gyarados. But with the move change, both sides of the equation changed:
Gyarados has now Dragon Tail, which is not efficient against Magneton. This nearly balances the higher STA and DEF of Jolteon.
Magnetons legacy move Discharge is now 3*65, for a total of 195 damage; this is on par with the strongest moves of Jolteon. Magnetons new Zap Canon deals 140 damage in a single attack, much better than Thunder and nearly as much total damage as Jolteons two-bar Thunderbolt.

I always use Magnets vs Gyara... From the start until now... Very efficient... Lately I attacked a L7 Gyara Tower... Some of my Magnets destroy (2) Gyara before they die.. Especially those Gyara with twister....

Magneton is a beast. I like discharge more than zap cannon but their both really good. Magnetons hp is what kills him, if his hp were on par with jolteon he'd be better than jolteon. He kills Gyarados faster. Ive been tryna put together an army of magnetons!

Normally Gyarados will kill the Magneton just by spamming Dragon Tails, and then the Hydro Pump kills the next Pokémon in your lineup. Bite and Dragon Breath are trash on defense, even before the update.

Against Dragonites, though, truly shines against SW and DB ones, things will nearly become the same if the Dragonite has DT.

I prefer him but dodging charge moves is highly recommended if you want him to last long enough to take out more than one mon. I haven’t used zap cannon but discharge is fantastic.

You really need spark (or legacy ts) to be able to dodge. Cb causes you to take unneeded hits. I also believe discharge is superior to zc. I use my 1900 cp s/d Magenton both to prestige and on my normal team to take out Gary.

Given the choice, would you all power up a Discharge Magneton with Spark or Thunder Shock? I have both.

That was the last pokemon I powered up, my spark/discharge Magneton. I might see what the damage breakpoint is and power him up a little more to see if that makes a difference. I like him, but it comes down to your stardust. It might just make more sense to try and get a level 30 Jolteon.

Would you recommend powering him up I have a spark discharge one too he's by far my favorite electric prestiger

I guess that depends on if you ever prestige with a team around 1900 cp. At 1900 cp he doesn't perform as well as I was expecting. I think he is just as capable at the 1200 cp as 1900. If he is your favorite prestiger and wouldn't want him around 1900, I wouldn't touch him.

I do have a high-level Jolt, but that was before Gyarados got Dragon Tail. Now the battles hemorrhage health more than I'd like. It's probably not worth the dust, but certainly a thought.

DT is the issue. Even though Magneton resists dt, it still has 30 less stamina than Jolteon, which basically cancels out the resistance.

Touche. I'll stick with what I've got and save the candies for Magnezone.

Magenton is way underrated, maybe because it's a bit rare. I have a TS/D up over 2000 and it's always been as good or better than 2000+ Jolteons. Also good vs Lapras (back in the day). Plus, there is an evolution coming so it's a future-proof investment!
