Confusion/Seed Bomb Exeggutor just bad?

I have a 2k Vine Whip/Solar Venasaur specifically for attacking Vaporeon so I was willing to power up my Confusion/Seed Bomb Exeggutor to 2.3k just for defense.

However, I'm slightly regretting it as I do not believe it is a good defensive moveset even though the site suggests so.

Consider something like Arcanine attacking Exeggutor, one of the most common methods. Seed bomb damage is just so bad (along with the grass resistance), it wastes time, and allows my Arcanine to fire off a flamethrower before Exeggutor shoots out another confusion for me to dodge. To make things worse, as seed bomb is a 3 charge move it can fire off 2/3 times in a row, during which time I'd rather it just spam confusion as it could've done well more damage.

Is Confusion/Solar or Confusion/Psychic Exeggutor just better than the Confusion/Seed Bomb? Or does it not matter as any Arcanine would wreck Exeggutor in the grand scheme of things?

I feel like Confusion/Psychic is definitely the best defensive moveset for Eggy. The only attackers that are strong in to him are Fire (for now at least), so Grass charge moves are pretty weak on defense. Maybe once more Dark pokemon come out it will be better, but for now it's pretty weak.

That said, it doesn't matter what the moves are so much. He's a solid defender. The grass moves will be strong against Lapras, whereas against double Psychic a Lapras can use strong ice moves without being punished.

Good point about the Lapras though I suspect most would rather save the Lapras for Dragonites rather than expending it on Exeggutor if given the choice.

My Eggy has 93 IV though, so should I still power it up to get its CP high enough for a safe gym spot, or should I power my 98 IV Dragonite instead (Or both)?

Depends on the player and what's in the rest of the gym. If there are two or more Dragonites above you, then there are probably few if any people that would use Lapras against Exeggutor.

I have two Lapras that are stronger than any of my fire pokemon. If there's only 1 Dragonite (or two weaker ones that a single Lapras can take out both) then I would use a Lapras instead of a Flareon (my Arcanine is bite/bulldoze) to take down the Exeggutor - especially if he had Psychic and even with Solar Beam (since I only need to dodge one of them and will only get chunked once). Seed Bomb may deny that opportunity.

I feel confusion/ seed bomb is a close second. I usually battle exeggutors with my arcanine which has higher cp and seed bombs are constantly annoying as they activate alot and one miss can deal a decent amount of dmg onto my arcanine even with it being non-effective as Exeggutor's attack stats in this game are insane. Solar beam is just terrible for defense, only activates once and its easy to dodge.
