Will I lose the distance traveled (buddy Pokémon) when the event starts? I am still not sure about this. Will I earn 1 more candy? Currently at 1.4 kilometers with Chansey, more than 1.25 kilometers.
Get your distance as close as you can to a new candy earn, if you are walking Chansey get her as close as 4.9km as you can and close the app as soon as the last distance is updated (to prevent drifting and earning the candy before the event starts)
When you open the app again once the event has started you will instantly get 3xcandies and you will be very close to the 4th one.
Last time you got all the candy for the fractions you had walked.
That is, if you were about to get a candy on a 5km buddy, and were at 4km+ walk, you would get the 3 for the first 3x1.25km and then another at the 5km point.
By having your buddy very close to getting their next candy will optimise your candy drop at the start of the event.
