1398 Poliwrath Power up or leave

Iv at 89%

Bubble/Hydro is the moveset, hatched from an egg.

I have incredible Vaporeon defenders is it worth the dust to bring the Poliwrath up to lv 30 from 20?

This might not technically be the right answer but I, personally, would not power it up since I prefer bubble and ice punch since any attacker will probably resist water attacks anyways and ice punch is super effective against grass. And eggsegutor will probably be the 'mon attacking your polywrath since it has a double strength. That's just preference though. If you definitely want bubble and hydropump and you like polywrath then go for it, but I wouldn't waste a bunch of dust on a polywrath if you don't really care for polywrath and have good vaporeons.

I would not. I would aim for submission or ice Punch, you may end up with a higher IV in the process as well.

Poliwrath is an excellent defender, but hydro pump kinda ruins his groove. Don't give up on getting one.

I would not. You would only do it if you have surplus of dust. Otherwise put into vaporeon for higher cp and gym holding capabilities. Plus, a truly best defensive moveset would be ice punch due to grass attackers

Everyone in here is giving bad advice saying vaporeon is better than poliwrath on defense. Poliwrath's Bubble deals more than twice the dps of vape's water gun. And Hydro Pump is absolutely the best secondary move available for defense for poliwrath, not ice punch or submission, those moves barely deal more dps than bubble. It is absolutely worth it to power it up man!

Bubble/Hydro pump isn't bad for attack. He'll make a decent all rounder.

Except that Vaporeon's max CP is over 300 points higher (meaning he will be placed higher, and thus more securely, in gyms) and Vaporeon has close to 100 more HP (meaning that any reduction in DPS from a weaker moveset will be somewhat offset by his longevity in battle) and Vaporeon is a stronger attacker should you want to use him for both attack and defense. While Poliwrath is clearly a good defender, I would prioritize powering up any high IV Vaporeons I had first, no question.

Yea you make a good point about him being placed slightly higher, i was just thinking about combat effectiveness. You are exaggerating with the health though, it's only +80, and that health boost isn't as big as it seems though because vape's defense is lower making all that health of his weaker. Vaporeon really will only survive 20% longer than poliwrath all while poliwrath deals +100% damage. Op said he already has a ton of vaporeon so he's set on attack, and I think it's clear who's stronger on defense :).

Bubble is extremely slow. Submission and ice Punch help break up the slow attacks. Hydro pump takes much longer to charge, more players will dodge it, and makes poliwrath a single attack type instead of 2. To each their own, but I would take ice or sub over hydro any day. I agree 100 percent that Poli is way better than a vaporeon though.

All great responses, the game has been kind to give me over 10 vaporeons over 85 IV%, i felt that ice punch would have gave the edge in defense, not only to eggxcutor but to dragons as well. Guess ill just have to wait for another good defender, I feel odd that i have so many vaporeons, it has guaranteed me many high ranking gyms but its just like, "well i guess ill put vaporeon 6 into this one..." just want some variety,

I understand the variety thing. Personally I don't mind spending candy on good but not perfect Pokemon if it adds a very usable option.

I'd just wait until you have a ton of dust sitting around .. hard to justify boosting up a defender who won't be in your 10 top defenders by CP for long (if at all).
