After walking a lot I finally collected the needed candies to evolve my very first dragonite. I got the optimal attacking moveset which I'm incredibly hyped for... but from what I see it's not so optimal defending gyms, which is one of the reasons why I wanted a Dragonite...

I guess my question is that do I really only attack with this guy? I'm probably never getting another one unless I catch one or get lucky because I seriously can't walk anymore lol. It stinks that it's only level 20.

It just needs powering up to 2500... Seriously the big strength is the ability to raise the CP high. When I'm attacking a gym I'd rather attack a Dragonite of the same CP than a Snorlax or Lapras...

So you're telling me that literally all that matters is CP and that even with the "worst" moveset for defense it's fine?

Dragonite does have a good attack, but I would say its best attribute as a defender is being able to reach extremely high CP and thus sit at (or near) the top of many gyms. However, if you're using it as an attacker, it's definitely advantageous to have a good moveset for the STAB bonus.

It has excellent resistances(besides ice) super high base stats, always at the top of gyms. It's very good no matter what, just not AS good.

I let a 2700 dragonite hit me with hyper beam and it took a massive amount of damage, and that's it's worst moveset. you have dragon claw, which would be hard to dodge at least and still hit hard.

It's a better attacker as some say, but still a fantastic defender. Use it however you want.

I would use it for attacking while collecting more candy and you will have plenty of time to decide until it's high enough to defend.

I would only use him for attacking. It would be a waste to have him left as a defender. Powered up he will tear gyms down and save you potions while doing so.

Alright, I guess I'm less worried now!

For now I'll definitely only reserve him for clearing gyms since even at it's lower CP it can rip through stuff. As someone suggested, I'll wait until he has close to 2500 before even considering putting him in a gym. Hopefully a few wild dratini appear soon because powering up can take awhile. Thanks for the advice!

One more vote for using it as an attacker only.
You will never find another attacker that is so
A) time efficient
B) potion efficient
C) versatile (resisted only by lapras)

potion efficient* , vaporeon is better
+ he dont kill lapras fastly but its good.

I threw my first dragonite all powered up with that same moveset in a gym, and haven't gotten him back since. To be honest, I wish I had waited for my other one with DB/DP to put in a gym. I have 3 now, 2 with DB/DC, and I must say, attacking with the DB/DC moveset there is nothing like it. If I had both out of a gym, it'd be insanity. Just think about that before you throw him ina gym

I don't think that I'll have that problem here on campus because it's really competitive. The longest I've seen even a lv 10 gym last is a day or so. I would still not do it because I only have one and as you said should focus on attack because he's obviously better suited for it.
