It happened! Now what to do?

I got a shiney magikarp level 29! Except it's IVs are terrible it's either 24% 0a-0d-11hp or 35% 0-5-11. Maxed out at my level it would be a 2800cp. Not very good. But it's a a shiney!

I figured if I did get a shiney magikarp the stats would be terrible. They don't spawn often here at all as I got most of my candies during the water event. It would cost 500 candies to evolve and power up leaving me with about 150 left. Not enough to evolve another and unlikely I would get more candies soon.

To evolve a 24% shiney or not? I actually have a level 27 92% Magikarp that I could evolve instead.

Hold off for now. Unless you really want that dex entry. I normally don't tell people not to evolve or power up mons they like but really, those IVs are rough.

If you can place a mon around 2500-2600 in your area then id just go ahead and evolve as you wont need to waste any dust at level 29. if the gyms are higher than that i might not evolve him - the whole point is to show him off, right?

Yep. The point is 100% to show him off. 2500cp is pretty low for our gyms here. Powered up to 2800 would get me a middle spot in a gym but would cost me 90,000 dust.

I'm very very unlikely to get another shiney. I've maybe only seen 2 shiney Gyarados here in our city as we don't have magikarp spawns. Barely any water here.

Honestly, I'd just go for it. I have 9 Gyarados (took me 6 tries to get Hydro Pump pre-Gen II) and evolved two new ones during the water event and STILL haven't found a shiny karp. At this point I'd evolve a level 1 0% shiny.

I was in a similar situation when I got my golden Karp - it had only 56% IV, and only 28 CP. As they aren't common here and I'm unlikely to get another, I chose to evolve it and max it out because I really wanted that red Gyarados. I don't regret any of it. His CP is still high so now I can show it off in gyms and it just looks so damn cool.

It depends on you. If you really want it go ahead and evolve it. If you don't really care about the color of your mons, go for the high IV one instead.

Congrats! After the long wait, you got a fine shinykarp, level 29 no less. Who cares about the IV's? Shinies are for fun. So evolve him and don't look back (but do post a screen shot).

I caught 3 shinykarp during the event (with no more than about 100 magikarp caught) and none have great stats:

CP 124 - A12, D14, H0 - 58%
CP 20 - 12/10/12 - 76%
CP 10 - 49%

Although magikarp aren't rare here (I have 5 gyarados), shinies are - I haven't encountered any since the event, and seen only one other shiny gyarados in the nearby town and < 5 in the city (and I have looked for them in a lot of gyms). So cheaters apparently have difficulty getting them. I'm wondering if I'll ever get another, so my plan is to evolve them all!

My shiny gyarados has pretty much stayed in gyms (just got kicked out, I noticed), and usually gets a decent spot. He's currently lvl 34.5.

If you already have several good Gyaras I would go for it, if not hold off.

My wife and I were on a trip recently and I saw a carp spawn by a local stop by the resort. She was in the shower so I took her phone and mine and went down to catch it. Turned out to be lvl 30 with 84% IV and when I caught it on her phone it was shiny. She evolved it and got DT/Outrage as a bonus. So my wife is all set, I still need to get a good one though.

With those IV's it's not going to sit high in a gym but they are getting reworked anyway and at that cp it's going to take almost no dust to get to level 30. So it comes down to how common are candies in your area?

Candies are rare as they don't really spawn here. I only have 1 Gyarados (but he is 96%!) Walked 300km with him to power him up. Then when I finally got him there was a water event. Damn. They were pretty rare to see in gyms here. We have the wrong biome.

So having a red one is very unique here! I likely won't ever get enough candies for another Gyarados. So it's this guy or my 92% one.

Since you already have a 96% gyarados, why hesitate? Evolve your shiny, you won't regret it.

You said it: "...it's a shiney!" Similar situation here, I evolved a shiny with lousy IVs into a Gyarados with B/C. But it's mine & I'm gradually powering it up although it'll only ever barely ever manage a 3000 CP or so max. Reason? Only seen one other around where I live, so it's a statement. Take down a gym, one I know I can't hold & in goes THE Red Dragon (just like the lorma96 pic). Who cares about IVs and movesets. Easier for me though 'cos I have a few Gyarados, but it rarely matters whether they're high IVs or not, someone with a decent Jolteon solves that problem for ya PDQ anyway. Whatever you decide to do you're a winner.

I understand, LOL. I love to show him off in a gym, but I think others like to kick him out ;)

Gyarados, even low IV, always place high in gyms anyway. It's the rarity that matters, and shinies should have high trade value.

It has good HP, and Gyarados has good natural stats to compensate for poor IV. If it gets Bite it'll be an attacker anyway, like mine, and IV don't matter for attack.
