Gyarados Dilemmas

Evolved my 3rd ever Gyarados 2 days ago.

My 1st ever was a 93% Bite+Hydro Pump
Powered it to lvl 30.

My 2nd was a 98% Bite+Crunch
was kinda disappointed with moveset...
have not powered up as of yet

And now my 3rd...
had 899 Candy, a good IV Karp ready,
figured lets go for it, might get good moves.

96%...got Bite+Crunch...again :/

Honestly pretty damm disappointed, not only did i want a better moveset...but to get the exact same moveset again, feels like a total waste as I already have one the exact same.

on these last two, I was really happy with the IV's aswell obviously...took me awhile to get such good magikarp, and now its even harder with karps not hatching from eggs.

Now Im left with 499 Karp Candy.

And my next best contenders are 91% and 89%

What do ? take another chance and evolve...be left with essentially no magikarp candy ? and just hope for something better

or save these 499 candy and wait abit ?

thanks

How difficult for your area to get magikarp candies?

Bite+Hydro Pump is definitely worth to power up,.......dragon tail one is not necessary better becoz cool down is a lot longer

I would say..kinda standard.

Not exactly rare but I don't see them extremely often either.

It would take me a while basically. It was only because of the recent water event I managed to save up enough for 2 evolves.

And yeah...im still happy with my Bite+Hydro

And I already have powered it to 30/31...you mean worth powering it up further ?

B/C is devastating, it is like the slightly better replacement after twister became a legacy move, but still, nobody would be happy with B/C gyarados. DT/C, on the other hand, is quite good at defending gym. I said this based on my experience as a frequent gym attacker: crunch is great on defense, it just strikes repeatedly and dragon tail deals significant damage if you failed to dodge, so DT/C gyaradoses have some use. The problem with B/C is that the moveset is completely useless. The advantage crunch has on defense is not enough a compensation for the bigger disadvantage bite has on defense, and inversely, the advantage bite has on offense is not enough a compensation for the bigger disadvantage crunch has on offense, these are due to the lack of STAB too. I recommend you to evolve another magikarp, if 91% IV is not good enough for you, than wait for a better one. Certainly don't invest anything to B/C gyaradoses.

hmmm, and thats the main problem. Just something different that I can atleast see a use for.

After my first B/C...i was like oh well. Shame because it was almost perfect IV's..but I can try again.

But after getting the same moves twice in a row....such a bummer

I know the pain. All 7 gyarados I evolved had bite as fast move. At least, one of them had hydropump.

Both of my event Gyarados got B/C so I feel your pain. I'd go for one of your other Karp candidates, as long as one of them has a high attack stat the CP difference wont be too significant.

Honestly that moveset gets a bad rep it's not as bad as people make it out to be. Is it better than a gyarados with other moves as of right now? No, but it does have type advantage since it is a double dark type moveset. The only problem with that moveset is that since gyarados isn't a dark type Pokémon it doesn't benefit from STAB but besides that it's good for attacking into Exeggutors which are decently common in gyms, Espeon as well along with Alakazam depending how your gym scene is. Also in the near future whenever mewtwo, mew and celebi get introduced to the game you already know people are going to be throwing those Pokémon into gyms and there all psychic type Pokémon and you know what's good against psychic types? Dark type. So long story short hold off until the gym rework happens because for all you know that moveset could be better once that happens even with gyarados not being a dark type Pokémon. Also even with gyarados having high cp and good movesets he isn't exactly the best for defense.

Bite on Gyrados does more DPS than Water gun on Vaperon and Vaperon has a 205 attack stat.

Messed around a little on Pokebattler. And a level 30 Gyrados or Level 30 Houndoom vs a 33 Espeon.
(Just picked random)

Gyrados won 15.9 sec 45% (Dodge Specials Pro)
Hound won 14.8 sec 31%

If you don't dodge at all, going for max kill speed Gary still beats Espeon but Hounddoom doesn.t

On dodge all, Houndoom pulls away being both faster and living with a higher percentage.

All in all, Gary preforms okay in this roll.
