If you defeat one by yourself how much XP do you get for the complete over taking of the level 10 gym?

Depend on your strategy, varies.

You'll find the Gym guides here really helpful (lots of good info about that). For example, pulled from here:

"For every enemy Pokémon you defeat, you earn 100 XP and reduce the gym's prestige by 1,000. Sweeping all of the gym's Pokémon in one go earns you an additional 50 XP and reduces the gym's prestige by another 1,000!"

So yes, total XP gained will depend on how you choose to tackle the gym (including, e.g., how often you get the "sweep all" bonus).

You will get MUCH less XP than if you spend that time just catching mons.
You don't battle gyms for XP...you just get a token amount of XP when you do battle them.

in a low spawn density area it can be reasonable. but yeh mostly you do it for 1) coins 2) dust (if you can get a stable spot otherwise faster and easier to catch 5 mons) 3) ummm I was going to say fun but that's debatable.

you get the same amount as if you beat it with 19 other people.

Depends on the situation no set amount. The XP is a joke, but for fun why not right lol? The quickest way to empty bag space before and after a level up.
