Question on attacking a gym thats already under attack.

Forgive my noobness.

So I saw a level 7 gym being attacked and decided to help out. Why is it when I join in the fight, my first fighter invariably takes a truck load of damage, or even faints?

And how do I prevent this from happening?

Should I just lead with a blissey next time and then swap out into a fighter?

If the person who initiated the fight started 30 seconds before you do then you will receive 30 seconds of free punishment.

To prevent this start the fight at the same time as the initiator.

If the first attacker uses something like Pidgey and it faints, your first Pokémon, even Blissey, will faint, too.

If the first attacker's Blissey has been taken away 50% of its total HP, your first attacking Pokémon's 50% HP will be taken.

If the first attacker's 5 Pokémon have fainted, you will have 5 Pokémon fainted in the battle.

That is really bad for you if the first attacker is like a level 5 trainer without any top tier Pokémon.

Oh but wait... So does it make sense to start the first fight with a pidgey then? Haha. Just let it take the 1st damage penalty, all 100% of it

Are you sure this is how it works? I was told that a person joining a battle in progress will take the amount of raw damage inflicted to the original attacker, not a percentage of HP nor the number of pokemon that have fainted. If the first attacker used a Pidgey and it fainted, if you then join in with a Blissey it wouldn't faint - it'd just be down 40 HP or so.

Oh I see. So if its midway under attack there's no way of knowing when he has killed off the first pokemon and I can join in just as he starts the 2nd pokemon?

When you join a battle that's already in progress you'll take all of the damage already dealt to the other attacker, you should either join at the same time, or use an extremely tanky pokemon and then switch out to the correct attacker.
