Gyarados advice

The water event was great for me as it allowed me to finally get my first Gyarados. I evolved my 14/14/14 Magikarp and ended up with Bite/Outrage Gyarados, with 575 candy left over and a few more high IV Magikarp (Att/Def/Sta: 15/15/11, 15/11/15 or 15/12/15 - not sure which). I know that Bite/Outrage isn't the best attacking moveset, but it's not a terrible one. It also isn't a great defending moveset, and although I could easily power it up to be higher CP than my current highest (I think I can get it up to 2997 based on my level), I already have a 2858 Blissey and 2889 Snorlax that I'd rather use as a defender, since I'm usually not competing for top gym placement as an Instinct player.

In my place, would you spend the candy to power up the Bite/Outrage Gyarados, evolve a different Gyarados and hope for a better moveset to power up, or just hold off and see if RNG decides to gift me a shiny Magikarp some day since I might not even use this Gyarados much?

Bite/outrage is an excellent move set for attacking purposes. I like bite better than dragon tail in attacking, because it is easier to dodge.

For me, the only better attacking move set would have been bite/hydropump. But my guess is that you already have a vaporeon for that, so it's great to have outrage I guess.

Wouldn't count on a shiny if magikarp are not a common spawn for you. Not sure what your current CP is, but I would power it up. You will sure remain enough candy for another evolution in future.

I agree regarding Bite vs Dragon Tail - I prefer dodging too, so I agree with your Bite/Pump conclusion. Powering up to level 30 leaves me with a solid 509 candy remaining (it was a level 20 egg hatch), and I can get it up to 34.5 at most. I'll test it out in gym battles and then I'll decide whether or not to take the plunge and go all the way to 34.5. Thanks for the advice!

A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush. Not only is BxO a good attacker, it's a solid defender. I would power up for the purpose you plan for it, and keep moving forward on your next Karps.

I would save candies for a shinny (I am actually doing this, but already got 9 Gyarados).
You Gyarados is a great attacker, if you can power it up to level 30 and still have candies for another one, than that's the best choice imo.

I disagree about shiny. If the odds carry over from the main game, they appear with odds of 1:4096 (same as rolling perfect IVs). The odds of getting a shiny wonder are really bad, and the odds of getting a perfect shiny astronomical. I'm playing the game as though shinies don't exist--they're so rare as to make that practically true--and will deal with the happy problem of getting a decent shiny magikarp in the future.

The main benefit of Gyarados on Defense is high CP. They all fold to Jolteon. I would power it up and try to stick it above a Rhydon somewhere.
