Which mediocre Dragonite to power up?
So today I evolved my third Dragonite. Now for some this gives me no right to complain. However for a third time I evolved into a Dragonite with Steel Wing. Two of my Dragonites have Steel Wing/Hyper Beam, the latest one has Steel Wing/Outrage.
Honestly I'm pretty pissed/sad about this. I really wanted a Dragonite with a Dragon quick move, unfortunately it's not meant to be.
My current Dragonites are lvl 21, 20 and 14. I don't feel like waiting till I evolve another Dratini before powering one of my current dragons to lvl 30. So the question becomes, which one?
2 choices really:
A) lvl 21, 87% IV's (attack is 15), SW / HB
B) lvl 20, 82% IV's (attack is 15), SW / Outrage
Which one would you power up, if at all?

Personally I would power up the one with Outrage. A single STAB Outrage has about 138 base damage compared to Hyper Beam's 150, but only requires 50 energy, so you end up doing much more damage over time, and both have similar durations so you don't lose dodging ability with Outrage over Hyper Beam, so there's no tradeoff. Outrage is just straight up better than Hyper Beam.
Steel Wing isn't that bad of a move. While it is the worst of the 3 quick moves, it's still the highest neutral DPS move in the game with similar EPS to the other top DPS moves, plus a decently fast cooldown that still allows for dodging without too much downtime.
The moveset gradings are relative only to the other movesets of that one Pokemon, not to the movesets of every Pokemon. A Steel Wing Dragonite which is rated C on offense will still hit harder than a lot of other Pokemon with A-rated movesets.

Your right that a Dragonite with Steel Wing is still better then most other Pokemon. However I've heard a lot of great stories about people wrecking havoc with their Dragon Breath dragons that I was kinda sad when mine ended up with Steel Wing (especially when the move was super slow).
This one has Outrage at least, so that's a sweet new move to try out. Will probably end up powering that one as soon as I have all the required candies (short like 10 or so).
I have a SW/DC Dragonite and it's fine when attacking gyms. Although I don't have a DB/DC or DT/Outrage to compare to.
SW/Outrage is probably comparable to the old DB/DP moveset, and that moveset was really good for attacking back when it wasn't legacy. DB is going to be better than SW, but Outrage beats DP, so they'll probably cancel out, except when SW is resisted, for example against Vaporeon.
I don't think SW is so disgusting for att as most people say, at least it is faster than DT it still a better attacker than most pokemon in the game. For defense it is worse than DT ones, but he still have a very hight cp. B would be a good option to take down blisseys and hold hight spots on gyms. Anyway it is best for you to spend your candies to turn one of this guys into a 3000+ cp than to evolve another one that has like 99.999999999% chance of getting SW/HB.
The outrage no doubt about it, too bad you didnt get dragons tail, but steel wing is fine, is strong neutral attack with fast speed and nice eps, hyperbeam is terrible, and hurricane is fine if you want fast things but if you wanted dragon moves ,outrage is the one, you would get more benefit from outrage than having dragon tails without outrage
I feel your pain. I have to drive far to dratini nesting places but am able to collect and hatch enough to evolve one every month or so. I have now evolved 9. I have always gotten steel wing.
It's really discouraging. I don't know if it's better to never have one or to always get crappy ones. I guess the worst would be to collect dratini for a year and finally evolve and get a crappy one!
